As far as what I said about role models, I know when I was in HS I saw a few guys from my team get scholarships, that was a huge motivating factor for me. I saw concrete evidence that this does and can pay off.
This is all true. World XC has been phased out. 10000 on the track is being phased out. Europeans are emphasizing the field events they can compete in. The Canadian National Track League has virtually no distance events.
But is it because EA athletes have the "advantage" of being poor, or because American/European athletes have the disadvantage of not working hard enough? American and Russian MIDDLE distance runners do quite well competing against those Kenyan supermen in championships.
