This seems like a great idea if implemented correctly.

what are you talking about...a good idea? This club represents everything about ultra running that sucks. There are guys/girls towards the top of the ultra scene that are talented and actually run hard and deserve respect. The rest of the ultra scene is a bunch of arrogant morons who think that farther equals harder. That is because they don't know how to push themselves.
It's a good thing that pushing yourself to go FASTER is the only way to push yourself...oh wait, IT ISN'T. You can also push yourself to go further (farther, whatever). In a 5k race, you pace yourself, and because it is a shorter race, you go faster. In a 50 miler, you still have to pace yourself, you have to worry about nutrition and hydration, and you happen to go a little slower. BFD. These are still races and the people running are either racing each other or their PB. They are no more arrogant or bigger morons that the narrow minded people that think how fast you run their particular race is all that matters. You people who rip on others for their participation in a chosen sport or distance look cool to no one but yourselves, and need to think about why you are so damn insecure.
No, the problem is that people aren't pushing themselves, if you walk half of the "race" and claim you ran 50 miles, you are a liar. If you try hard at an ultra then I applaud you just like any other distance. But read the start of this post, this kid thinks there is no opportunity for good runners (which he is not) and acts like running for a college is beneath him. Maybe I just feel this way because I have met him and heard his delusional thinking, so don't attack others about not knowing what they are talking about when you don't know what you are talking about. Go Walk you tool!
Obviously some people missed the point here.
I didn't realize this post got ANY attention, and dang did it get it!
Anyone who was actually interested in havin a supportive team to train for ultras with should email me at gakunkelATsbcglobal.net
The idea wasn't to claim that I'm the best in the world, nowhere near yet, but I'm solid for my age and would like to train with others who are at least on my level -other 4 hour'ish (trail) 50k runners would be optimal.. anyone who's too much better at 20 either has mad talent (certainly not me! -16:0x 5k PR) or isn't going to last very long. I felt so sorry for Tony when he was sidelined for so long, but training that much, other than making you a complete stud, can knock you out of the game. Id rather compete at a moderate level for the next 5 years or so, then my body will be at its natural peak for a solid push... I think I've responded to enough.

For people that have no interest in joining, what are your thoughts?
I wish you luck in the project, but for development, don't also overlook the numerous "older" ultrarunners/mountain runners and events in No Co. These guys have slower road/5k PR's but faster trail distance PR's than you're describing, and are happy to share training insights and experience with anyone on a run. There are also cherry-pick races with almost no competition, and a handful of more competitive ones -- the former boosts the rankings, while the latter is where the lessons are learned quickly.

While I am ignoring you malicious intent...
That's exactly what happend! I set out to throw it down with whoever, seeing as it was my first ultra that I trained specifically for (and first time training real miles). The only problem was that the dude setting the pace smashed the CR by a huge margin and I was nowhere near ready for that. Not to mention I still didn't have a nutrition/hydration plan and got really dehydrated. By about 23 I was toast and went from like 8 flats to walking. Have you ever run an ultra? You learn a ton from getting the crap kicked out of you! It was a big step forward for me either way. And I'm running much faster now that I've learned to drink..
That's adorably spoken like someone who's never run an ultra. Did you look at the winning time at Hardrock this year and think "slower than 13 mins a mile? I could win that for sure." ?? 53 miles in 8 hours isn't fast, but I'm actually the only person who's ever run that far on that course. It isn't exactly a strong CR but it's still a CR. If someone runs an 8 minute mile up the incline in Colorado springs, is that pathetically slow just because people everywhere can run 8 min miles?
