Since when does the NCAA allow 5 seasons of competition?

I'd like to see an explanation. His school's sports info dept appears to be unapologetic and makes no effort to obfuscate the five outdoor seasons.

hahaha, wow holy shit! I cant believe they got away with this! I love how it says in his bio list of accomplishments,

"Just the Fifth Athlete in BSC T&F History to Sweep an Event All Four Years of Eligibility (McDougal, Johnson, Rhue, Aydlette), FIRST TO WIN FIVE TITLES IN ONE EVENT OVER A CAREER!!!!"

Well of course he's the first to win 5 titles, because it is against NCAA regulations so nobody is even supposed to be allowed to compete and attempt that! What a f*cking joke he got away with this! I'd love to hear the bullshit excuse behind this. I wish they would just say you get 4 years and thats it no matter what, even if you are injured.

Looks to me that he only competed in two meets during the 2009 outdoor season with nothing after the 04/16 conference meet. I'm guessing that this would still qualify as a redshirt season because the last meet, his conference, was technically still in the first half of the season and that he only competed twice. That's what you get for having such an early conference meet...this could possibly happen in the ACC and other conferences as well.

If that is the case, the NCAA should reconsider requirements to count a season as a redshirt. I'm all for protecting athlete's eligibility, and allowing them a redshirt and a medical if they really deserve it, but this doesn't really seem fair to the rest of the members of the conference, for him to compete (and win), and then not have to count the season.

How in the hell is a conference meet in the first half of a season?

I had a teammate that competed in the CAA Championship 5 times.

The meet was mid April.

His sophomore year he was hurt and did not compete after that meet and had knee surgery. He was able to take that as a red-shirt year.

He did not win the race that year but did in other years and ran at NCAA's in years 1, 3, 4 and 5.

If you start your season, let's say, the last weekend of March and finish in early June at the NCAA meet then the third weekend of April would qualify as the first half of your season. Hardship can be claimed if you participate in no more than three comps or 30% within the first half of the season. I'm not saying I agree but it seems to fit withing the NCAA rules;

14.2.4.3.4.2 Individual Sports. In individual sports, the first half of the season calculation is based

on the number of days in the season that concludes with the NCAA championship, as declared by the

institution, between the first date of competition used by any individual on the team and the last date

of competition used by any individual on the team at the end of the declared playing season, including

a conference championship and any regular-season competition scheduled after the conference

championship (e.g., “last chance” meet). Any break in the declared season shall not be counted (e.g.,

institutional vacation period in which no practice or competition occurs). The total number of days in

the championship season shall be divided by two in order to determine the first half of the season. A

fractional portion of a day shall be rounded up to the next whole number. (Adopted: 4/24/08)
