The person referred to as "Bud Wittens" who is seen winning the hurdles and the long jump actually was the National Junior AAU champion in the intermediate hurdles (220y) in 1936. The African-American runner who crushes everyone in the 100y heat (Paul Forte) ends up being the first sprinter to run 9.9 in yards at the MA state meet in 1937. In 1936 with those two athletes Newton High actually ran a 1:32 in the 4x220, not a bad time on cinder for 1936 (state record at the time).
Thanks for finding/posting this!
The HJ looked like a competition to see who could kick the bar the furthest.
The old "scissor jump" - long before Fosbury!
thanks to Bill Carr.
I did the "Fosbury" in 1969 in junior high and landed on that old triangular aluminum bar many times...OUCH! My best height was using the roll.
Had a teammate in HS who came straight down on one of those old triangular aluminum bars. The thing seemed to be stuck to standards, but it eventually bent, popped straight up about 8 inches, and came straight down on top of the standards and stayed. The bottom of the bar was probably 4 inches lower than before his jump. One of the goofier things I've seen at the track.
