When you've been running as long as I have, you've seen more crazy things than you can remember. I will tell you about the most convenient thing I've ever seen.
I was out on a Sunday for an over distance run of about 30 miles, I wan attempting this run, at least. The temperature was hot and the air was muggy. Needless to say, I was death marching by about mile 20. At 25 miles, I had an important choice: finish with the last 5 mile loop I had planned, or cut through the woods to my house, cutting the run short at about 26.5 miles. I chose the latter, and boy was I glad.
These woods were popular for hunters. Not the real hunters, mind you. Rather, the guys who would tell their wives they were hunting and then go sit in the woods, drinking beers for 10 hours to escape. As I approached a clearing in the woods, I saw a couple portable chairs, empty, and a cooler.
The cooler was filled. Yup, I made the decision to look inside the cooler. I'm sure many of you, if you've been in this position before, would've done the same. And so it goes that before finishing one of the more notorious death marches of my life, I was able to enjoy a frosty Budweiser, courtesy of the local "hunters." Not crazy, but certainly convenient.
