Thoughts? Dreams? Well Wishes?
George Watts
Is Watts the guy from UVA?
I don't think so. It has to be a high profile coach. The AF over there is that type of guy. He's invested too much on the t/f program to hire a "temporary" replacement.
They should hire the old throws coach.... Reynolds back from Bama.
Any truth to the Watson rumors? LRC has beeen right before...
Watts is old and slow. Not a chance. Sprints coach for sure.
What about bringing John Gondak back.
Watson was in Lexington for 2 days this past week.
bump
John Mortimer back to Kentucky.
He got fired by the old guy who resigned. He deserves a shot at that post. He took the girls team to Nationals in 09. Most success the "team" has had recently.
BRING MORTIMER back
Go CATS
With TX A&M and Missouri joining the SEC...what would give UK the best shot to move into a conference contender most quickly? Do you go with a sprint oriented head coach and try to compete with TX A&M, LSU, and Florida for those points...could KY compete in the recruiting ring for sprint talent against those tradition rich schools or would they be wasting their money in that arena?
They've probably had their best success lately in the field events...with a frosh Javelin thrower and Soph discus thrower scoring at NCAA's this year. Do you use that success plus very recent successes in the field events, specifically throws, to attract quality talent in field events? Big guy/girl rednecks in that part of the country might fit well and be likely to choose a school like UK (still country and small towny).
Or do you go with a distance orientation? Plenty of tradition at UK to recruit off of....perfectly good training climate, country roads for long runs, plenty of greenspace places with trails. The SEC is pretty weak in distance right now, so points might be available quickly if you go hard in this direction...but unfortunately, the area takes a little time to develop as you have superstars develop until Jr. year unless you go the foreign route.
I'm pretty sure the AD, based on his goal of 15 conference or National championships by 2015 (among all sports), plus the AD does want UK to contend in the Sears Cup all-sport standings (they were 2nd this year on the mens side), would prefer the fastest way possible to either win a conference title OR place high at NCAA outdoors to get points. Either way, I'm thinking the new head coach will want to throw full scholarships to fewer but high quality athletes as a way to jump start the program and then build some area of reputation and success. No taking chances on unknown talents by spreading out the scholarhship monies and coming up empty.
What is Scott Simpson up to these days?
Who? Do you mean Simmons?
Who has won track and field conference championships (any level) from nothing? UK needs a LEADER who can figure out how to assemble the talent needed to win SECs, secure, retain, and develop that talent.
YES Mortimer as head coach. He's a distance machine.
SEC is VERY weak in distance... especially the men's side. Distance based programs tend to do well since cross country is a season in itself all Fall.
