I'll admit, it was nice. I went to a top ACC program and it was like being a pro athlete for 4 years.
Then you leave and realize you aren't a pro athlete.

Lots of pressure, grades often suffer, and not much social life outside of running. Most of your weekends consist of traveling to some god forsaken track meet in the middle of nowhere.
It's not any different than being a d2 or d3 runner, except you get a lot more free shoes.
I ran D1...
...and my team got cut. I'm jealous of you.
Lots of pressure, especially if you're injured.
You don't get a lot of sleep, especially if you are a serious student.
Lots of Dbag teammates who only care about running.
Body is constantly tired.
If you go to a school that isn't fully funded there is often a lot of competition among teammates for scholarship.
I got injured, quit and became and alcoholic my senior year. It's not all it's cracked up to be. Although, if you are one of those freak athletes who never has a bad race, improves steadily all 4/5 years, and wins races, D1 track/CC can be awesome. I got an ulcer because of the constant stress/pressure from coaches and myself. Would I do it all over again? Yes, without a doubt. BUT it was a hard lifestyle to live.

...and a lot of free ass! If I had a quarter for every time I banged a field hockey or women's lacrosse player in the steam room... Those girls are horny, I think it is because they are all Northern Catholic Yankees.
I run at an ACC school you are always tired pressure on you to succeed in every way. competition is stiff and you barely get recognized for being as talented as you are. social life suffers and grades suffer. Often if you are at a big football school the athletic department doesnt care about you

So you go to Clemson.
My thinking was that I would rather get beat by D1 athletes than D2 or D3. Haha, just kidding. It is a rough system though and you are only worth as much as your last race. The pressure is huge and if you don't really love running you run a high risk of quitting. Oh yeah, you're tired all the time too.
Madison in the winter is no joke.

Giggity giggity!! This is so awesome. Do tell more!
Op, what "great conditions" do d1 people have that you don't?
What happens if you get injured and can't run the next 4 years? Do you get to keep the full ride?
Does your scholarship depend on performance each year? If that is the case, it must be stressful. Can the coach take a way the scholarship or cut you to take it away if he thinks you're not working hard enough?

I ran div 3 and it was more or less like a HS track. Compare to what the div 1 guys do, its night and day. The guy who ran the most mpw in my team was like 70. Even with that we were always only a spot away from making the NCAA xc finals.
I remember in one home meet, there was a CC team with all black guys looking more like sprinters. They sprinted first 500 meters and everyone passed them on the corner. Whole div 3 experience was low pressure joke. I wish I knew how div 1 guys trained back then. No internet. nothing so nobody knew nothing back then. more than 25 years ago
I am starting at my school this year. I'm excited, but I'm so far away that I am having issues with my lady friend...

Don't worry, there will be plenty of women's field hockey and lacrosse babes to bang in the steam room.

So because it was like that 25 years ago, that's how it is now? Thanks for your brilliant contribution. I know d3 guys who run anywhere from 100-120 mpw, so you were just a joke. There is definitely more pressure from coaches and the AD in D1, though, that's for sure. I'm a little sick of it, to tell you the truth.
Ha probably coming from someone who is running in a D2 or D3 school. It is WORLDS different. Thats actually insulting
I go to a D1 school that is a fairly prestigious private school. It f'ing sucks. The coach is really bad and has no charisma at all. All we get is a pair of trainers, the usual uniform and warmups with bag, and then maybe an unexpected t shirt.
For how much our school puts into the other sports programs its ridiculous that its all we get. We also host one of the largest xc races in the nation. It's actually ridiculous.
When I remove the things that a normal student would get, it actually in many ways is worse than high school. The trainers give less a sh!t about me, my coach doesn't give more than a small sh!t about me, the ice bathes are actually worse (garbage cans vs whirlpool is hs).
Pile insane amounts of engineering work, and it sucks. A nearby D2 school produces insane success from the range of talent it receives from high school, mostly because the coach is superb.
Just thinking about it pisses me off. No doubt that REAL D1 programs are better. My school should just drop us down if it's not going to take it seriously. Sorry for btching so much.
