At the D1 level, VERY few athletes are on full athletic scholarships. At the universities I know, not a single athlete on the team was on a full athletic scholarship. The max anyone was on was about 70%. If you don't believe me, read Running with the Buffaloes. Jorge and Ed Torres were offered what? 60% each to run for CU? And they were big name FLN finalists and everything.
This is kind of a silly question anyways as running for somewhere like Montana is going to be hugely different than running for Stanford. I've known guys as slow as 10:00 3200m who were able to get a little money (think like books + 10%) at some schools, and I know of a guy who ran 4:15 and 1:52 as a junior and wasn't offered any money at all from a not so great school (never makes xc nationals), so it really depends. Any times people throw out are going to be a broad estimate with exceptions. If a kid wants to know if they'd receive scholarship money, they should check out the roster and see where they would fall on the depth chart. If they'd immediately contribute to top 3 on the team, expect a fair amount of money. If only top 7, expect a little money. If not in the top 7, expect little to no money. That's how I would gauge it.
