I'm an upcoming senior at a decent DII school but have left the team for personal reasons. After making a huge leap from High School to freshman year (going from a 9:55 2 mile to an 8:43 3k), I have not improved since then (though I attribute this to the increase in mileage from 50 --> 80 during the first year). I have run 15:09-15:15 for the 5k for the last two years and have had some pretty horrendous races along the way as well. I also seem to have lost my competitive fire and will to really push myself. However, with only one year of college left, I want to try to go out on a good note while I still have the time to train. I have been at ~80 miles per week for the last 3 years and our coach has had us do some variation of a tempo run 2x a week for 90% of the season without doing much speed at all. I think that this lack of variation has led to me getting stale. In order to get off this plateau, what should I do?
Increase my mileage? Decrease the mileage and up the intensity? Something else entirely? Please help me letsrun!
