I had a pair of Waffle Trainers, but wasn't really running yet. First shoe I bought specifically for running was the Etonic km Streetfighter. Blue suede running shoes, man!

Onitsuka Tigers (blue nylon that weighed virtually nothing) in 1970. They had arch support and that's about it.
My grandmother purchased them from a fellow named Dick Pond, selling them out of a trailer at a local cross country meet.
I trained (not much then at age 11) in them and raced in them - if you call it that.
And oh, they were perfectly acceptable shoes.
Onitsuka Tiger Spirit (circa 1980) also bought my freshman year from Dick Pond via our high school coach. They were blue with red stripes and came in a plastic drawstring bag, sweet shoes. Incidentally they were my only Asics (Onitsuka) shoes until my current pair (cumulus) in 32 years. Love my Asics now too!
Vibram See-Yas
Nike Terra TC.

One more pair of Onitsuka Tigers, White leather with red & blue stripes. Weird pointy toes and soft outer sole. Long ago sent to the trash.

Yep, me too. Same shoe, same year. Hideous blue shoes with orange stripe. When I got "serious" a couple years later, I felt I could justify spending FORTY DOLLARS for the Vantage which was in all the running magazines.

That was my first pair as well. Did you have the black/red ones or the purple/white? I had the purple/white, which led to some snickers from my teammates because they looked kinda fruity, but I loved those shoes.

Same here, bought mine the second day of track season after I showed up the first day in Vans fairlines.
Don't remember what kind of Nike brand but it was all white leather w/a red swoosh. This was back in the early 80s when I did track in middle school.
Tiger Marathon, Spring 1973.
Adidas SL 72. Blue with white stripes bought in 1975.
Also a pair of blue and orange Brooks Villanovas--in 8th grade, I think.
First pair once I started actually training: Tiger X-Caliber GT.
Spring 1973. Either really old Nikes something like these:
Or Brooks that were black and gold. I had red leather Adidas sprint spikes.
I clearly remember buying the shoes for track and my normally mild mannered and polite dad arguing with the shoe guy at the sports store about why would anyone want to buy a pair of Running shoes when high top Converse were perfectly fine. Within four or five years dad was wearing running shoes for his 3X/week run around the neighborhood, which had been doing since the mid-60s.
I started training more seriously in 1976 and got the Adidas Country and put on something like 1500 miles with them.
My first shoe bought only to run in and as a runner Asics Kayano. I started running and was feeling some knee soreness and thought I need I well supported running shoe.
My first track spike was a 1973 Tiger suede version of Viren's 76 shoes pictured.
Saucony Jazz
Fall '79, yellow Nike LDV's.
See if any of you remember this one.
My first running shoes were the Etonic Streetfighters, circa 1981. They were a darker blue suede in the front, with a lighter blue nylon on the back half and a yellow "stripe" between.
The thing I remember is when they got wet with sweat or rain, the suede in the front bled and got your socks and feet BLUE.
Someone else mentioned Nike Terra TCs. I loved that shoe! So much so, that I wore them to my own wedding reception! :-)
I was a such a tool. I wore the Nike Air Max 180. Some guy at Footlocker convinced me it was "fast" shoe back in 1991

I also bought the waffle racers at the end of 1992
My first "legit" trainer was the Nike Windrunner.
