I really cannot figure out how taping something up is "unsportsmanlike".

The taping thing is no longer allowed... You either remove it or get dq'd. You can dislike the rule but it is still the rule. The official doesn't get to choose which rules he/she enforces.
It's pretty clear that this article is written with a huge slant towards the runner. It makes it seem like she forgot that she had just gotten her ears pierced a few minutes before the race which i doubt was true. Also, I'm not saying that its not true, but I'd love to see the rule that gets her only a warning for leaving the jewelry in without taping it, but gets her disqualified for trying to cover it up.
bullshit call. you can't dq a kid for a uniform or jewelry infraction after the race starts.
she isn't even wearing spikes. 10th place? How many people were competing?

This simply isn't true. Especially with uniform rules, officials often choose which rules to enforce. I've even had officials come right out and tell the teams that they aren't going to be too picky about certain rules.
Yes you can. At any time and up to 30 min after.
As a long time coach and certified official I have to say the rule is close to being absurd. However, the rule is that she and the team receive a warning if she is sporting the jewelry. If she purposely tried to cover it up knowing the rule it may be considered unsportsmanlike. if it was me as the official, I would have given them the warning. In addition, it should have been caught in the check in area.
The games committee may and does relax certain rules according to the rule book. An official MAY NOT relax the rules on his on. Does it happen? Sure. Is it allowed? No. Any official doing this should be replaced.Once again you might not like the rule but it is the rule and a GOOD official will not pick and choose which rules he/she follows..
sure they do wrote:

I saw my son DQ'd in a mile race for unsportsmanlike conduct for staying in Lane 1 when another guy ran up on him on the final straight. I also have seen two guys get into a wild arm swinging slugging match on the second curve of an 800 and not get DQ'd. You watch enough HS races and you definitely will see some dumb officiating.
Was he getting lapped or competing for the win?

Yes you can, in fact, kids are usually pulled from the chute in XC races if the violation is caught during the race.
Way to save the sport - kudos for making it a better and more fair race. We all know taped up jewellery makes people faster.
What a joke this is.
I know rules are rules. blah blah blah. HOw about people get some f88king perspective and think about things that matter rather than this insane behaviour.
Funny that she said "I was definitely not trying to hide my jewelry".
LOL!!! Yes she was!!! Looks like her blond hair goes to the very depths of her brain.
Who is really at fault here?
The rule is clearly stated and has been around a long time. Why would anyone blame the official for enforcing a well known rule.
If you don't like the rule work to get it changed. But don't complain when clearly written down rules are enforced.
Yahoo only had this story so people would click on the story with the pretty blonde.

Such a lame response. Totally an abdication of your own responsibility to have an opinion against stupidity.
You are safe to sit back and simply say "work within the system", but that overlooks the basic premise that the system, and the people that work within it are limited by the basic fact of human stupidity.
Shake up the status quo - get mad.
it might be a stupid rule but unless it is changes or until it is changed it should be enforced.
she didnt even win the race
The rule is there for safety- hoop earings can be dangerous, necklaces can be dangerous. You can't expect them to list what jewelry is safe and what isn't, so it's all excluded.
It would have been just as easy for her to take them out as put tape over them.
Be serious.
I hate all the picky rules, too but this applies to ALL high school sports and is clear- no jewelry.
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
