For the past 1 1/2 - 2 weeks I've been feeling sapped of energy early in practice and struggling to complete workouts that didn't used to present a challenge. I can't seem to pinpoint what the issue is and I was hoping some advice or personal experience could provide insight on the issue.
Example Workouts:
At the beginning of the season I knocked out a 5:10 1600 Time Trial and felt fantastic.
Last week we did a 4x1600 workout with 5:00 rest. I hit 5:50 on the first one and it felt like hell. I hit 5:52 on the 2nd one and it felt like an all out effort. I broke up the 3rd mile into 2 800s and the last mile into 400s because I couldn't complete the full miles. How can I go from 5:10 easy to a painful 5:50 in less than 4 weeks? I know the other was a TT and this was a workout, but still... I feel like 5:50 should've been an easy interval. The guys who ran 5:08 and 5:09 at that TT ran their workout between 5:25 and 5:30.
I've noticed the issue is more prominent on longer pacing workouts. 200, 400 and short 800 repeat workouts aren't bad. I can go at a high pace with regular rest, it's maintaining pace for longer periods of time that I'm struggling with.
Could I have lost all of my base?
Basically, at the beginning of the season I felt awesome and I was knockin' out times right where I wanted to be. Now, 4 or 5 weeks into the season I'm struggling to finish workouts at paces that I could run last year. I have shin splints and I understand those account for some of the slowness, but that can't be the sole factor?
I get 7-9 hours of sleep regularly, I have good grades in school... what is wrong? Am I sick? Could it be mono? I don't think I'm anemic? I eat a pretty decent diet, better than in the past. Can anyone point me in the right direction to deal with this?
