I am a very driven 15 year old guy, and want to do a lot of base work this summer to prepare for the 5k in my fall XC season. My plan is to do very high mileage on 7 main runs a week, up to doubling for a total of 12-14 weekly sessions and perhaps approaching 100mpw. My Aerobic work is lydiard-based (at least my interpretation), and so i plan on doing three long runs a week: 1 long run (90 to 135min) and 2 sub-long runs (60 to 100 min). I have read a little bit on Kenyan based Threshold training and the italian coach Renato Canova's methods, and plan on having two threshold sessions a week: 1 traditional tempo to subtempo run, anywhere from 30 to 90 min, with the pace appropriately adjusted; and 1 alternation based workout, with 1/2 to 1 mile segments that alternately hit tempo pace and a recovering pace for again anywhere from 30 to 90 min. In the interest of not doing too much tempo work, I will plan on compensating an overly long 90 min subtempo run with a shorter 30min alteration run, and vice-versa.
In order to ensure I can run this much without getting injured, i plan on spending 30-60min a day on strengthening exercises (everything from the feet to the arms); on alternating days i will emphasize different muscle groups.
As far as my personal running capabilities, I think i have very mediocre talent but a lot of drive. This past summer I had a base of 50-60 mile weeks and ran a 17:30 5k and a 4:49 mile. This winter I worked up to a peak week of 75-80mpw, and had a string of 3 straight 70's (over a 15week period I averaged 60mpw). So far I've ran one indoor meet (at the end of a week of 70) and ran the 3200m in 10:40. I am yet to race in outdoor track, but am pretty confident that my high mileage this winter has helped me immensely.
I was just looking for any opinions on my plan or experiences with like-minded plans, especially from anyone with experience running very high-mileage very young.
Thanks in advance to any replies.
