I bet your coach wasn't a former distance runner.

Learn how to read. He said at altitude with New Mexico he ran 7:30 pace some days. At Arkansas under John no one ever ran 7:30 unless they wanted a boot in there ass

The best teams train "easy" and race fast. Slow is relative.
I agree, smart runners should run "easy" in relation their current ability. Most good coaches would say a range of 65-75% heart rate for non-workout runs is the zone you will benefit most from.
Say you have two runners named Joe and Mike who have both run 14:30 for a 5k. Now runner Joe might like to run 6 minute pace on his easy days and that gets him around 75% heart, while in contrast runner Mike likes to run 7 minute pace and that gets his heart rate around 65%.
Neither of them is wrong.
However, say their teammate runner Alex has run 15:30 for a 5k and is trying to run with runner Joe at 6 minute pace he is probably going to overtrain because every run is workout for him.
for D3 possibly Lynchburg and North Central
Best reply so far...

Yep, my bad. Remembered that article from last year and copied and pasted without much more than a quick scan. Good catch.
Paranoia about sharing information is the mark of low self esteem and insecurity.
I am a walk-on at Wisconsin. During the indoor season last year, I averaged about 6:50 per mile on my "easy" miles and avg. about 65 miles per week. Did 1 30 min. tempo a week and 1 interval workout (full recovery and short reps) a week. That's all I will say for now.
