Bringing back the mile is a fine idea. It would be fun. But what we really need to do is standardize the distance races in HS T&F with the 1500/3000. The 1600/3200 is a double that is convenient for lap counters and other officials. The 1500 is an international distance and it works fine in HS. The 3000m is its complement distance.
HS T&F needs to make all district, regional, and state meets standardized. If you want to have the mile, 3200, or whatever at your invite, that is your choice but let's establish a standard for HS. This works for Oregon HS teams.
We run the mile at our big invite and the 1500 at all other meets in preparation for the district and state meets. We painted the mile line on the track and we love it as a novelty. That's about it. It is a yard distance and we have meter tracks.
If you did this, the young public doing most of the racing will identify with performances in other states. We standardized the tracks at 400m, let's set the track distances with modern updates.
