Okay so I'll start by saying that no I'm not a troll, I'm a high school junior who needs some solid advice from the letsrun community. I have gotten a lot of great advice for training in the past from here and I figure you guys could help me out a lot with this..
My problem is my high school track/XC program is really just kind of a joke. Since my freshman year I have had four different coaches over the span of four seasons. Every one was a new coach ~2 years or less experience, and was only a filling the spot for our high school, they really did not know what they were doing..
I came in running decent times freshman year (4:40 mile, 2:02 800m, No XC Freshman year) but ever since I have made almost no progress over two years of highschool. I haven't hit fastest ability obviously but it just seems like my potential is being choked by our highschool program. I work my butt off during the offseason, but then in season I just loose everything because we don't train hard enough.
This past summer I put in some solid mileage for XC season and the first race I ran pretty decent (1640) the problem was, that was the fastest I would run all season. No one on my team was even under 1800 so I had no one to train with and even worse, my coach made me run the majority of the runs with them because he wanted me to "lead the team". By the state meet ( I was the only one to make it) I was almost 40 seconds slower. The XC coach had no set plan ever and just came up with workouts the day of practice.
My question is, this upcoming track season I have this same coach as my 800-mile coach. I am running out of time in my HS career to run fast times, and I am thinking of just training myself to the best of my ability and the help of letsrun. There are some postseason meets I know of that I could do. Have any of you guys been in a similar postion? How did you deal with it to do you best? Really any advice you guys have I would appreciate. I'm all ears.
