That is idiotic. Any way you look at the splits show he had absolutely no chance of top 5. If he ran so much "slower" the first part of the race, he would have been able to finish much faster. His 14:45/14:55 splits show he didn't do that. Andrew Colley, who finished right behind him was 8 seconds back at 5k and 5 seconds back at 8k and finished with the same time. Out of the 2 other runners who also ran 14:45 at 5k, one finished 3 seconds better than Batty and one finished 4 seconds behind.
Batty ran no different pace wise than 90% of the field. The two guys who did keep moving through the field were Lowe and Fernandez who ran 12-15 seconds faster the second half than the first.
