Geoff Smith debut sub 2:10 at New York 1983
You're right - very similar to Dave Clarke's pbs from the late 70s (3.39/13.22/27.56/2.13) - 13.28 is equal to 27.56 for world class runners and that makes sense. This only means, as you implied, that Overall has never run in one of those 'paced' 10,000 races (Stanford type) which are in short supply these days.
He can only get better - but could a 'Canova' train an 'Overall' to a 2.05 performance? That is the question. Or what about Overall joining someone like Salazar? Would he withstand the well known intensity of Salazar's program?
People ask me about Bernie Ford? Flashback to the mid 70s. I was at Crystal Palace one night and Ford was training for a big 10,000. He ran an all out 400 on the track that night and the result was 56 seconds...so that was his maximum speed for 400, not even counting what it would be in a race situation. Ford was all out in the 1500 at 3.47.....so he just did not have the super leg speed, but his endurance was second to none. On 80miles a week he ran a very good 2.10 in the Fukuoka marathonm, taking it right to the line with the top Japanese at the time.
If Dibaba and Defar have as much intrinsic speed as Ford, then the top women should soon approach and go under 14' and 29' for 5000/10,000. Radcliffe's time (2.15) is worth in that region. And women have the physiological advantage of utilizing their physionomy in the marathon - that is why you have all those Jap females running around 2.22-2.23 with pbs of around 15.30/32.00 for the track distances - not too many men could do the same.

Obviously Robert Chapman has this marathon training figured out. Haas has not run up to his ability, however would not be surprised when he pops a good time. Indiana Elite has knowhere near the whistles and bells of the Nike groups or McMillan. Nice to see Chapman and Overall put together a plan and execute to perfection.
2'10'55 (you can say 2'11) IS NOT A BIG DEAL AT ALL. Gives a F...!! get real!!! Guys were running 2'11, 50 years ago.
2'09"08...in a WWWWWAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY HARDER COURSE. geoff would beat overall with 1 leg.

Nope, 2.10.
And how fast does he have to run to deserve a letsrun thread in your opinion, you jealous old fool?
Well done Scott Overall.

He's one of the guys that does the hand chopping in the town squares.
Business is good it seems.
Nice try. We need Professors/Lecturers/teachers - all areas, include Engineering, Maths, Science, and English teachers. M.A. preferred in specialist area. B.A. + CELTA (or equivalent) acceptable for English teachers in the Foundation Year. Solid class management skills for Foundation Year teachers. This is a different culture. Interest and appreciation of Islam a + but not necessary.
Rewards include substantial holidays and low teaching loads. Run competitively with Aramco road runners club, one of the top clubs in Saudi.
Save big bucks working here. Everything is taken care of including accommodation and flights home every year.

With the talent coming out of east Africa, 2:10 is becoming borderline amateur on a course like Berlin.
Nice to see an Englishman run faster than Paula for once. Not too many in last few years.
Standards in the UK have declined a lot over the last 20 years. Back in the 70s/early 80s most 10 mile road races in the London area were won in the 48" to 49" range, but these days, many 10 mile races are won in around 55 minutes or slower, and if you can run under 60 minutes for 10 miles, in most clubs, in the UK, these days - you will be considered 'fast.'
Lowering standards, and a jogging culture, with many joggers coming into the sport via the marathon, without training and racing at the lower distances. People are satisfied with mediocre performances, because they are given encouragement for running slow times. There is not much of culture of excellence any more.

Too much competition from other sports. Too many triathletes.
But then again, the Brownlee brothers can run a 10k that old timers would have been proud of.

I know. They've been known to run around 28 minutes at the end of a triathlon.
What was that? Triathlon 10ks are not always 10k? Are you sure?
