Marga didn't look that sharp in Paris!
Marga didn't look that sharp in Paris!
Most sub-13:00s in one race is 10, has happened twice - Rome in 2006 (K. Bekele won over Shaheen in 12:51) and Oslo last year (Merga over T. Bekele and Lagat, 12:53 high).
I'm most excited for the Fireworks!!! occurring at 22:05 in the program.

If it's fast it's Farah for the win with a big last lap off a fast pace in 12:50-52, with Rupp not far behind.
a) Once again, um, ever heard of Bernard Kipchichir Lagat?
b) If Farah wins in 12:50, Rupp won't be that close. Rupp is running amazingly, but people thinking he will soon run near12:50/51 are really getting ahead of themselves (unless the synthetic air Salazar's guys are breathing is even more powerful than I thought)
I'm curious. Why do we necessarily think this Monaco 5000M will be fast? That Birmingham race almost seemed deliberately slow. As if the runners collectively wanted it slow even though it was great conditions for a fast race. Why would it be any different in Monaco?
history is usually a pretty good indication of quality races in Europe (unless weather conditions are bad)
A lot will depend on what happens in the first few laps. If the pacers go out fast but the pack doesn't follow, or if they go too slow it's very difficult to make up the lost time and regain the rhythm. It almost never happens.
Even if the pace is on target at the beginning, someone will still have to take up the burden of pushing the pace in the middle portion of the race. Who will be willing to do that? We know it won't be Lagat, or Rupp for that matter. Maybe Solinsky?
There's a reason that sub 12:50 does not happen frequently.
The main reason that Birmingham was not a fast race was because David K did a pretty poor job at rabbiting. Additionally, they only had 1 rabbit and only a couple legitimate sub 13:00 5k guys.
Monaco, I'm sure, will provide better rabbits that will likely carry the field through 3k. The field is also much higher caliber with experienced racers in European rabbited affairs.
I wonder how Solinsky's hamstring is? I also wonder if Teg is in sub 13:00 shape. I can't imagine he is, but who knows.
I'm going to go Lagat 12:51, Solinsky (assuming he has been training well) 12:55-57, Rupp 12:55-57, Teg 13:02.
However, I think Solinsky can close the gap by the time the WC rolls around and similarly, think Teg could be a dark horse in the 10k come the WC.
I mentioned it before, but I would guess that Teg is probably working on his strength this year to make up for a lost base in 2010. Then I bet next year he's switch back to the 5k for the OG while Solinsky moved up to 10k.
Solinsky explodes for a 12:49.99
bank on it!!!!!!!!!!!
Mo Farah will get 2nd to a Kenyan or Ethiopian. Lagat 3rd, Rupp 7th with 12:59, Solinsky and Teg 10-11 with 13:02.
Just a guess

Lagat has a stated goal of sub 12:50. So that may come into play. He is seeking a fast time and others will likewise do so at the expense of worrying about place so much. Not that they won't try to win if they have the chance, but I bet for more than one this is the meet to get that fast time.
if rupp beats lagat, i will run 4 miles buck naked.
It seems like these days no one has the guts to push the pace after the rabbit drops. When El G and company were running in their hey day it was full throttle all the way with no hesitation.
That's why back then you saw guys dropping 12:4x's and 3:2x's. What would happen is the rabbit would drop and the leader would put down a surge just maintain to the end. Bam 3:27. Bam 12:45.
Now - everyone looks at everyone else. People get bunched up. Everyone just waits for that final 53 lap. If I want to watch a jog + final lap sprint I could watch the US trials.
yeah i bet it had nothing to do with drug use...
they are also doped to the gills now. Alimarew is the biggest fraud on circuit. Coming out of nowhere last year in Rieti
running 7.27. Yeah right.

If you all had to place bets on Farah vs. Lagat, who would you take?
I'm personally not sure...

If Teg tries to nail guys from behind this race is going to be fast for sure.
A great motivational tool for Mr. Tegenkamp....
