Great news for me! He sure wasn't in my three picks.
Did anyone actually have him picked to medal??

He ran like a pussy at Penn in the DMR. It was obvious that he was clueless on how to lead a race. I said that this would cost him if he never learned how to run from the front. HERE WE ARE.
You guys are incredibly ignorant about racing as well as politics.
By the time the 1st quarter was run in 63-64 seconds and surely by the 800 at 2:07,there was no way any more than three guys from this hest were making the final. And two of them were inevitably going to be Lagat and Lomong
Unless you think he should have led the race from step one, there was nothing he could do.
Thus, Brown had to beat every one else in the heat -- and nearly did it. He had himself in position coming off the final turn and gave it his considerable all. Unfortunately for him, he got run down by a very good miler and kicker Will Leer. Given the circumstances, Brown could have done no better than he did.
You guys are like babies. You fall in love with runners and turn on them like a lover spurned (oops, mixed metaphor) when they disappoint you. Time to grow up. Brown had to live with this disappointment, you can go back to your shitty lives (compliments of LeBron)
R.B was clearly freaked after seeing Mrs. M's pedophiliac post on the 'Hottest male distance runner' thread and couldn't get his head back on straight.
And thanks to whoever was responsible for deleting that old lady's defamatory post about the Brazilian gold medalist and Hayward Field hero on the same thread. Classless as always.
Yet, another flash in the pan for US mile running.
So freaking annoying. Oh man guys, he's 26 and missed a world championship, I guess his career is completely over now. Let's just ignore the big improvements this year, because obviously since one race didn't play out well, he's never going to recover. Give me a break. Of course it's disappointing, is it the end of the world for him? I hardly think so. Jeez
Yeah, OLDER lady, you're the epitome of class. You know, calling someone a pedophile online has legal implications.
Go for it, but I hope you have plenty of spare cash tucked under your dirty mattress, because given your history, you'll have about as much luck winning this race as Russell had in that 1500.
Brown should have had his head in his hands when they came through 800m at such a slow pace, because he was out of the race for top 3 at that point (kick-wise) and certainly wasn't going to get through based on time. He can't expect to advance to any finals when his tactics are so piss-poor.
Maybe he can get in a few more races this summer and run some fast times.
When running a prelim you always go for the Q and do not rely on the q.
You have your race preparation. You don't alter that based on other heats times.
His tactics were fine. He just got beat by three people.
What if he lead for 1200 and then got passed by 7 people, helping 4 others get q's?
I guess people would praise him for having balls but he would have to take them and go home just the same.
where a bunch of 6:00 milers feel qualified enough to rip on someone running in the national championships

Wow - talk about an oversimplification. You think letting a 1500 go out in 2:08 for 800m when the field contains kickers like Lagat and Lomong (then you have to take into account someone like Leer) is smart? Brown gambled on getting that 3rd spot and it came back and bit him in the ass.
Tim Nelson made Russell Brown look like a tactical genius. Nelson had ZERO shot at making the team after 9200m.
Can't John Chaplin just put Brown back in?
I expect these championship/qualifying races to be tactical but a lot of this racing by otherwise very good runners is just suspect. Do these guys and their coaches actually plan these sit and kick (and hope) strategies after several years of work and sacrifice? What's the deal? Rupp and Teg, and maybe Curtis in the 10K had the tactical advantage to run the way they did, everyone else ought to have had an alternate race plan. In this heat Lagat was really the only guy with the advantage to choose not to lead, the other racers likely needed to take a risk at some point since they were at a disadvantage. Nobody did.
Nobody even thinks to join ranks with another low seed(s) and agree to swap leads or drive an honest pace. It pretty confounding. It's like the guy that studies his ass off for grades, revises his resume forty different times and never thinks to practice for the interview. Do these guys just show up to big races clueless as far as what to expect? How do the coaches let this happen fer chrissakes?

+1
I felt very bad for Brown though after this. If you've read articles about him and seen his interviews he's an extremely dedicated guy who's gone through a lot to get to the level he's at now. But people need to stop ripping him apart here. He made a tactical error, he'll be back next year with a shot at making the Olympics.

Hey, BS.
He got beaten in a time well above his pb.
He had to run a Q, and he didn't. If you slow the race down enough Juston Gatlin will make the final.
If there are 3 spots for the final and more than that many kickers better than you. Then you should not be sitting on a slow pace. His, and your tactical acumen is poor.
And
If you are not aware of the pace in the other semis, then you are a fool.
This is why there are top tier guys and middle tier guys. Good and sometimes great, but never at the top level.
If you want to be free spirited, do it in the final. The early rounds are business.

I agree he should now concentraten going to europe and getting in some fast times -- but piss poor tactics?
What are you talking about? What was he supposed to do? Lead from step one? He got caught in a lousy heat. No way he was going to beat Lomong or Lagat. Thus, he had to either hope for a fast heat - which was out of his control -- or beat every other single runner. he got outkicked by a very good miler an kicker in Will leer. Brown did absolutely nothing wrong in this race.

Well he did lead the first 800 in 2:07 and if he had the balls to turn it more into a strength race taking everbody through about 10seconds faster he could of perhaps held off Lear and Lomong or gotten in on time.
Going around the final turn, it looked like Lomong, Lagat and Russell were going to get the three auto qualifiers. Will Leer came out of nowhere and deserves some major props for running hard all the way to the line. Unfortunately for Russell, by the time he realized that Leer had gone by him, it was too late to do anything about it. He got blindsided yesterday. Everyone makes mistakes, and next year he'll be glad he picked this year to make one.
