So I've never bought flats before until now and I plan on using them for some road races this summer, not going to race them though, most likely tempo, and occasionally for tempo workouts, as well as tempo workouts during the XC season in the fall.
So in general, how much mileage can I put on flats before I should get a new pair? I bought the AdiZero Rocket if that helps for people who've used the shoe before.

I only wear them for workouts, but I have gone all through cross country, indoors, and outdoors with only one pair. They are so awesome and reasonably affordable. I am not so sure though about wearing them on all of your runs. They might last you a whole summer, but they will probably wear down fast. I just have experience with wearing flats during speed days.
I wear flats for all my runs and they last a reasonably long time if you're willing to keep wearing them after the uppers rip.
I had a pair of Rockets that I wore for 700 miles. Through 300, they felt pretty good on any surface. After that they were rough on pavement for longer runs, but worked good on dirt and trails till about 500. At that point the upper was ripping and they were pounded out unevenly, but I managed to push them another 200 miles in short easy runs before trashing them.
I've had similar experiences though I've never put a pair through 700 miles.
I typically play it by feel, once I start feeling small twigs and pebbles through the shoes I move them to grass use only. I still get 400+ miles out of a pair prior to moving them to grass only.
