Threads like this really hits me personally for some reason. I'll try to respond without that showing through.
Hodge is absolutely precise: Squires was not up to date, he was well ahead of it. Before there was a Canova working with nothing but the top talent in the world or Sal having alterG treadmills, there was Squires working with a cigarrette smoker, a guy who didn't believe in himself, and a shuffling kid from the area on the rolling hills and crappy indoor track in Boston. Canova's hill sprints? Squires. Heavy emphasis on quality, high end aerobic running? Squires. Periodization? Squires. Moderation and adaptation? Squires. I could EASILY go on, but you young guns either wouldn't here it or wouldn't want to believe it.
Keep praising, following, and supporting others while the best marathon coach that ever lived is right here in our own house. I know many folks here are a bunch of jealous, self hating, regretful lads, but don't mess with the elders who devoted their life to bettering others. I am NOT trying to advertise his book, but he virtually wrote everything and more that he prescribed for his boys while coaching GBTC. The same thing he didn't want Rodgers telling others, is everything that other coaches have plagiarized and called their own. Don't believe me, but the guy was the Ali of distance coaching: the greatest who not only excelled, but revolutionized the sport.
