yep, yhew gawts him pegged there ole buddy ole pal, you really nailed it (from behind, just like teg)
The WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS are in his backyard, and he's peaking for a 5k road race? WTF
He's definitely drogues free, although he did some sailing when he lived in the Caribbean:A drogue is a device to slow a boat down in a storm so that it does not speed excessively down the slope of a wave and crash into the next one. By slowing the vessel in heavy weather, the drogue can make it easier to control. A drogue is usually constructed to provide substantial resistance when dragged through the water, and is trailed behind the vessel on a long line.

yep, b/c everyone cares SO MUCH about the masters wc. let me see, what sounds better, winning the "world champs" in 16change, or setting a WORLD RECORD in 14:58 at a "random" road race? I'll take the record, thank you very much. this is aples and oranges compared to iaaf WC/ a geb/elg/bekele WR.....in which case i'd take the WC gold over a WR, but not when it's masters.
You can not set a world record in a road race. If if thinks he's the world's best 5000m runner over 50, he had a chance to prove it. How it seems like he's scared of either the competition or the drug testing.

Hey dutchman stop embarrasing the vaderland with your clutch plate accusations.

The guy routinely shows up for events like the U.S. National Cross-Country Championships and other races with top age-group (and sometimes open) competition. Something tells me he hasn't suddenly decided in his dotage to start ducking the guys he's been beating for years. Have you considered the fact that maybe he doesn't see the point of beating the next-fastest 50+ guy by 30 or 45 seconds when he can jump into a race with a number of open-division runners in the 14:30-15:00 range and stand a better chance of cracking fifteen minutes?
+1
Or maybe he thinks all the master's guys are just weirdos.

i suspect your letsrun handle is a stab at irony.
as of now, pete magill IS the best 5k runner over 50. running masters wc would not confirm it further; not running it does not disprove it in anyone's mind that matters. whoever does win it at worlds can take credit for winning against whomever shows up--after all, that's all you can ever do--but will doubtfully lay claim to the "world's best." if they manage to crack 15:30, which i'll lay good money they don't (i won't be surprised if they don't break 16!), we can re-open the discussion.
however, in case your ignorance is by birth and not by choice, there are a lot of other reasons NOT to go to worlds: 1) it's very expensive, with no way to recoup losses since there is no post-masters wc circuit to cash in on your newfound fame and glory; 2) it's in sacramento (sorry spikez)--nuff said; 3) it's in sacramento, which virtually eliminates the possibility of fast times in distance races (see results from usatf masters nationals last year); early entry deadlines--as old people, planning on where your body will be months ahead is tricky business. on top of this, for someone like pete, add on the burden of future world record attempts both on the roads (even if they are unofficial) and track, you'd have to understand running worlds makes no sense. i hate to say it, and i mean no disrespect to the competitors in the race, but my win last year at nationals in sacramento (40-44)--which was SLOWER than the 45-49 race!--was pretty hollow (and over a minute slower) compared to my race at ben brown in march against open runners, college, and high school kids.
that's my story and i'm sticking to it...
cush
I stood up for him when the drug label was first being thrown around. Now I think he's a pussy or a druggy.
Two references to US Nationals being compared to a World Championship. Guess what Americans? IT AIN'T THE SAME THING!

wha, you can't ??? oh bummer, i'll have to give up my "world record" then. since you obviously know all there is to know, about all there is to know. thanks for enlightening me, sir wise one.sincerely, Haile. btw, I was ducking drug testing when i skipped the world champs in order to do a road race. but you obviously already knew that, in your infinite wisdom.

Criterion for California Masters Runner to Race
1. Must be a cheap to enter and travel to
2. Must be in a beautiful location
3. Must offer perfect conditions
4. Must allow entry on the day of competition
5. Must provide a world record performance
You are selfish by not supporting masters track and field, your own state of California, and your nation. Plus, you are either weak or scared of the drug testing.
July 9th - The Schedule for M50 5000m heats is as follows:
Heat 3: 6:00pm
Heat 2: 6:24pm
Hear 1: 6:48pm
The estimated air temp at that time is to be around 90-91 degrees.
The only good thing is there's no humidity.
funny, as i read your criteria, i was nodding in agreement thinking someone finally gets it.
then i realized it was you. at my age, it's not about being selfish, it's about most of us actually having lives outside of masters running. and letsrun posting. pete, for one, has run--and won--national x-c meets in some of the worst conditions imaginable. i, for one, ran ben brown in 2010 in a torrential downpour. but you already knew that, the expert that you are.
also, sorry i'm not the uber-patriot you are. you might want to work on your "ask not what masters track can do for you, but what you can do for masters track" rhetoric--at this point you still sound like an ass with what you're spewing.
for the record though, i have to agree that i am weak right now. there's proof if you want to watch my race in eugene. however, i'm not afaid of drug testing. come on down to socal and i'll piss on you, and you'll get a smidgeon of caffeine, trace levels of alcohol, and a little discoloration from the gummybear multivitamins.
finally, enjoy the meet. i'm sure you're there, supporting masters track, the state of california, and our nation.
POD!
"i'm not afraid of drug testing. come on down to socal and i'll piss on you" -Cush, you need to put this on a t-shirt.
-OGH
A few months ago he was on here complaining about being called a drug cheat, declaring he would race anyone, anywhere, anytime. When the World Champs, with drug testing, are in his backyard he's saving it for Zurich, whoops, I mean the Turkey Trot 5k.
Don't you have anything better to do?
