why do you say there will be no race?
the article talked about the earthquake, but did not mention anything about the race.
Mate, there has been official word yet but it is HIGHLY unlikely the meet will go ahead. Christchurch is a complete and utter disaster zone right now. Accommodation (what's left of it) needs to go the citizens of Christchurch - some of whom have piles of rubble as houses. Not only that, the stadium is in New Brighton (well very close to) and that by reports is one of the worst affected areas. The ground around the track (and one can assume under it) has experienced liquefaction. Its just a complete mess there and I would seriously doubt its going to happen
oh and this just in - last earthquake (September 2010) the track was shut for 2 weeks after it. THIS earthquake was far bigger and more destructive. If anything is happening its going to be in Wellington not Christchurch
When I first heard it was lesser magnitude than last year's quake, I thought the meet would still be on, but as mentioned, the situation is worse and it is worse near the area of the stadium.
Even if the track surface was 100% o.k. there would most likely need to be some sort of safety inspection of the stadium before people can be let inside and there are many other public buildings that would need to be inspected first. Many parts of the city have lost electrical supply which you need for lighting and timing the meet. Too many other priorities for people in Christchurch at the moment.
Moron.

Meet will not be on. Christchurch have bigger things to worry about right now.
