On Thursday, I heard several hosts on a Christian broadcasting station doing what they love to do: insisting that Islam is a violent religion and that Islamic societies are innately violent. As opposed to Christian societies.
I though about America: a Christian nation from its earliest days, the hosts love to insist. OK. Call it that. But then there's a little problem: America is also one of the most violent, perhaps THE most violent, first-world nation in the world. Death-by-gun statistics for America are insane. We shoot each other to death at astounding rates. Not all of the people who commit murder-by-gun in America are Christians, of course. But many of them are.
Mexicans are ardent Christians, of course. Are they a notably nonviolent people? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
Tibetan Buddhists are atheists. When was the last time you heard of a Tibetan Buddhist shooting up a school, or shooting his own kids?
