They are a great family dog in the right situation...meaning structure, obedience, and past experience with dominant dogs that will occasionally challenge their owner (that doesn't mean they turn on you, it means they like to challenge your leadership at times). But, once your relationship is understood, they are awesome!

OK, self proclaimed expert back on it. The pit bull comparison was analogy only, for those not familiar with the breed. I sincerely hope the Presa you own never hurts a fly.

Presa Canarios were bred in the 1800's for the expressed purpose of dog fighting. Its predisposition to attack is inherent in the breed and again, don't give me that bullshit about raising it properly, etc. Just as herding breed owners notice that their dog tends to round-up the kids, and greyhounds tend to chase prey spotted at a distance, characteristics have been bred into dog breeds for a specific purpose and can surface regardless of environment.

Presas are an absolute work of art are beautiful creatures, but if the OP is looking to own one, I suggest he read everything available and be especially cognizant of this breed's overwhelming desire to attain alpha dog status in the pack (family) - and using force to get there. This dog must understand its place in the pack from the minute it arrives as a puppy. If you are adopting an adult, that's a whole 'nother story.

Look up a California State Supreme Court case from a few years back called People of the State of California versus Knoeller.

At least you're correct in they are a beautiful creature and recommending that the OP research the Presa fully before he decides to own one. I completely agree with you there!

Hell, even a wiki search will give you better information than the "expert". (Carl Semencic is educated but not a good reference for the Presa...fyi)

You might also want to research David Mech and his recant on alpha dog status since you're the "expert". But, you probably knew that and will tell us you're speaking to the general population.

I met one, once. I thought it was a pit. Its owner had it in a cage kennel in the bed of his truck, wouldn't let it in the cab. He wouldn't let me pet it.

Not sure why you would want a presa. If you really want a powerful dog, why not an Akita? You have to train them carefully, but they are a proven, extremely loyal family dog with a solid disposition. Or if you want a family dog for security, get a Shep, or a Kuvasz, they both love to run too which can be a bonus.

If you want a dog "for security" then just get one with a loud bark. Unarmed burglars aren't going to decide what breed it is that's barking, they're just going to avoid the house with the barking dog. Armed intruders, however, also don't care what breed it is that's barking and will do what they want to do and kill the dog if they have to, no matter how large or fierce the dog. And then you're f***ed. Might as well not get a type of dog that has been reported to maul and kill unarmed people because it could happen to you and your loved ones.

While were on the subject: I am thinking about getting a .357 magnum handgun without a trigger safety, and leaving it lying around my house, loaded and ready to fire, on purpose or accidentally. I was wondering if anyone else on letsrun has any experience owning this powerful weapon?

i appreciate your comments, but you are taking an unnecessary risk in owning these type of dogs. a rule of thumb would be if a dog can tear you to pieces then don't own it.

Pray that your dog does not have a bad day, because that's all it would take. Dogs can be properly trained but they are also human like anyone else.

Thank you for your concern. There are many things in life that are uncertain and if I were to allow fear to run my life, it would be pretty boring and lonely.

It's so funny that people here assume any one person's life is like yours because we frequent the same place (letsrun). Am I only a runner just because I'm reading this message board? Do you know if I'm around working cattle, hog hunting, running drugs, a multi-millionaire, a prostitute, a boy scout, computer nerd, car salesman, or just a family man looking for a good dog that will protect my wife and kids while I'm not around?

Take off the blinders people, we are all different. I am responsible for my actions and also for my dog's actions. If everyone else were to do the same, our society would be much better off.

When I curl up at night with my family and dogs (I also have an American Bulldog, Boxer and a Heeler/Pit mix along with the Presa), I am happy! Hopefully you are happy when you curl up at night with whatever it is you love so much. Maybe it's nothing, and that's o.k. too!

That woman's name was Diane Whipple and she qualified for the US Olympic Trials at 800m in 1996.Anyone seriously considering getting one of these dogs needs to have their head examined.

This is just 1 of many cases where a German Sheperd killed a child. Should I have my head examined if I want to get a Sheperd?

glocks do have a trigger safety. they have no manual safety.

I believe the poster was comparing irresponsible gun handling to the dog in question. But I could be wrong.

I'm retired cop and picked up a Presa from a K-9 cop. The K-9 team was experimenting with this dog. The k-9 guy later died in a pursuit so his family gave me this Presa.Got him at a year old. He is 10 now. Love him so much. Never seen him even growl at another dog. He only does not like unknown men approaching the house. I always have to introduce him to the man. I live at base of mountains.He does not like or seems to come alive with deer and a mountain lion that has walked my high fence line. That encounter was the first time I saw him ready to fight.

He has been quiet, not a barker and loves to just lay next to ya all day. He tells on my kids when they are getting wild by barking at me and walking ahead of me to the kids as they are climbing a tree. He uses his nose to tell you things. He wants a walk, he goes and gently touches the leash with his nose. He wants to tell you about a squirrl up in the tree above us, he touches my hand with his nose and then lifts his massive face pointing up into the tree. He is always on alert around the children.

Love him so much I am so worried to lose him as he is getting old. He was neutered early. I just don't know, maybe I just got lucky but I can honestly say never had a problem with him at all. I have always had dogs my entire life. He loves kids he pulls all kids sleds and stuff. He does like to give you a kiss right smack on the lips. Probably the only thing people have said yuk about.

Why don't you just get a black lab like a normal person? best dogs ever.
