So I've been trying to figure out how this guy got around the course at The Thunder Road Marathon last month. So check this out.
Earlier this evening I was telling my wife about this thread again, and in doing so remembered something about the race.
I was trying to hang with the 3 hour group and fell off somewhere around 12 miles. However, shortly after I fell off that group something strange happened. A vehicle, with a paper "Official Race Vehicle" sign in the window, passed me, on the actual marathon course. I saw it parked around the 1/2 marathon mark and said something to the folks there that it should stay off the course. A few miles down the course it again came past me and continued on. Again I saw it parked with the guy who was driving standing next to the course.
I thought it may have been an official following the women's race as the winner came out of the group that was running in the 3 hour pace group.
I'm really starting to think it could have been Mr Litton cruising around the course, stopping around the mat placement areas. (they were made public) And wouldn't you know it. His gun time 3:00:24.
I sent an email to the race info email and asked if there was in fact an official vehicle following the women's lead pack. Will post their reply.
The Concreet Runner is back. I'm back under my terms and my regulations. This Litton guys needs to come and do a couple marathons with the Concreet Runner. 8 to 10 marathons a year all between 2:38 and 2:52. 75 miles a week - all on the creet wearing racing flats. I'm in this piece of crap's age group. If he ever tries to play his games in a marathon I'm doing I'll open up a can of whoop ass on him.
I'm going to bottom line this thought because I have 4 miles to run on concreet and I have alcohol to drink, more specifically beer, whiskey, tequila, and more beer. Lots of us work our butts off to do what we do and some jackass comes and figures out a way around the system. If the Concreet Runner gets ahold of this sorry pile of junk the law, the media, and the Let's Run community are going to be the least of his problems.
And that's the bottom line cause the Concreet Runner said so.
GaryB - thats a great idea that you have come up with. At most races I've been too (over 30 marathons) I'd say that roughly <1% of race workers/volunteers would have any clue about an "official race vehicle".
Basically what I'm saying is that it would be rather easy for someone to make an "official race vehicle" sign, act as if they are "official" and easily gain access to the course. I'm eagerly awaiting the reply form Charlotte.
I've only seen cop cars and motorcycles, ambulances and cargo vans carrying race drop off bags. Rabbit vehicles usually lead the entire group, not the lead woman(in the middle of the pack). Guess he could rent a car in any city (as opposed to the bike theory)
I am man enough to admit when I'm wrong and I clearly was here. Now I understand. I think one of the messages here is, "Don't f*** with distance geeks." He clearly picked the wrong sport. I'll be interested to see how this turns out. Well done. Seacrest out!
Thought about the car thing a while back. It would work great at a small race like Thunder Road and Bayshore. Some parts of Bayshore are not closed to traffic. Even better if your brother-in-law (or anybody) comes with you.
Q: So the course isn't closed to traffic?
A: No, but due to the early start time traffic is very light for most of the race. The first 4 miles are in a residential setting with hardly any traffic. Miles 4 to 6 ½ are along a State Highway which will be closed to traffic from 7:00a.m. to 11:00a.m. You return to a residential setting during miles 6 ½ to the turnaround at 13 miles. Your biggest traffic concern here will be your fellow runners as those ahead of you head back to the start after the turnaround. Our Traverse City and Grand Traverse County Police are very helpful, supportive and help you to enjoy a safe and enjoyable race.
What if after 70 pages of investigating, we uncover that little Eddy Lee was the one helping Kip cheat? What if Eddy Lee was the REAL puppet master pulling all the strings? His true purpose being to create the greatest thread ever on letsrun, surpassing even his own sub 4 thread.
I bet golfers are worse. Which brings up a point - some folks exaggerate their handicap, help the ball onto the fairway or whatever, but imagine making up an entire tournament. " I broke 90 in every state!"
I know it's already pretty much proven the Sandy Springs race is fake, but as a pretty active runner here in ATL, I had to poke around a bit. I race quite a bit around here and had never heard of it. I don't see it listed on the local running calendar around here that always picks up small/low key/non USATF certified races.... it's not unheard for a small race in the ATL area - I've run a couple poorly advertised ones with just over 120 people. But those are dime-a-dozen 5ks.... A small half around here would be VERY unlikely.
Interesting...
Just what is the reality and whose is it?
First reply from Thunder Road
"Thanks for the email Gary, I will forward this to the whole team and get you an answer as soon as possible. We have looked into his times, and contacted Kip himself, and so far there isn’t enough evidence to disqualify him from our race. We try to be as objective as possible and just look at our race. With that being said, we are still gathering info, so thanks again for your email.
I will get back to you as soon as I can.

Rod - I was boggling there for a second, but could that just be something automatically scraped from, e.g., a mailing address like "David & Lisa Litton"? Isn't Lisa Litton his wife? If the scraper turned the "&" into an L...
Starting to dig around Boston 2010
These guys finished around him:
Murillo # 1898 (29+)
Montoya #2280 (24+)
Connor #1780(20+)
Hanson #1741(20+)
numbers in parens are photos available a marathonfoto.com. They are inexact because some are pre and post race "poses". Guess how many Kippy #1811 has?

Sure.
Looks like they have a place in FL about 2 hours away from Pine Hills. And also in Suttons Bay MI near Traverse City. No doubt why Bayshore is a favorite.

Yeah, already know that. I looked at his paces between checkpoints as well. Check
http://kiplitton.blogspot.com/2011/01/baa-boston-marathon-2010.htmlyes, only 3 photos as you stated.
now look at splits:
http://img291.imageshack.us/img291/1995/bostonprofilekip.jpgdoesnt prove anything, but he did pace very well. i dont know boston well enough to know how common it is to run only slightly slower during its later stages.
I agree. I'd think BAA would be interested in investigating since this guy pulled a fast one the day before with a 17:17 5K and then possibly the next day at BOSTON. BAA and timing service are/should be the best of the best when it comes to this, given the marathon's long history and ROsie Ruiz, etc
Do you think Kip would've broken 2:51net/2:55gun at PF Chang Arizona had he NOT walked the last bit here?

Great thread! Keep it coming.
