I want to get a garmin.
as of this typing I can get a Garmin 305 on Amazon for $99, but it is soo big and fugly looking.
I can get a garmin 405 for $194. Looks more like a watch and not as big and ugly as the 305.
What should I get? Anybody have any reasons why one might be better than the other from a performance point of view?
The devices are equal in capabilities. You have to decide if you want a larger screen and better battery life (305) or a more compact device that costs twice as much. I own the 305.
I almost feel like Garmin and other GPS companies are holding out on us. I feel like they could make a much thinner and lighter gps watch than the 305.
I know they have the other more compact ones but still.

No they are not. The 305 is the multisport/triathlon model - it has a handle bar mount, is waterproof, can sync up with certain bike computers, etc.
F*** you, idiot. The EDGE 305 is the bike computer. The 305 this person is talking about is the forerunner 305. F***ing asshole.
I got the FR60 a couple of months ago. NOT a GPS - this has a footpod accelerometer. Quite a bit cheaper - about USD175 for watch, footpod and chest strap - yet accurate to within 1 per cent.
It is great for runners as it can measure distance in places where GPS goes funny: thick woods, near tall buildings, and even on a treadmill indoors (I do not trust the calibration in many gyms).
It has also allowed me to do types of sessions I could not do before e.g. if you want to do 6x1000 with 2min rests over rolling terrain or on the roads, you can just do it.
If you have not owned a Garmin before, I have to say the Garmin Connect software is amazing. Sit down at the PC, the dongle detects my watch, and the sessions are wired up to the web site in a few seconds.

not to be a dick, but for what reason do you think a Garmin is going to help your current training? Running by minutes is just as effective as running by miles. Tempos on the track for pacing and interval work. Now you have $100 for food and new trainers. Merry xmas.

At no point did the OP ask your opinion on the use of the Garmin 305. He wants a forerunner 305 or a 405. Why is not any of your concern.
The 305 can also pair with the garmin footpod, so for another 50-60 bucks, you can track indoor or trail runs as well. Enjoy.

i have the 305 and love it. it is big but it is surprisingly comfortable to wear. $99 is a great deal
I've been really impressed with the 610. I used to have the the 305, but found it to be a bit bulky and the GPS reception wasn't perfect in the city. However, once you got out into the country it was fine. However, I recently upgraded to the 610 and am delighted with it.

Why do I seem to click onto old threads? Anyway, I have the 405 and love the lightness and feel of it. If money is an issue then go with the 305. It's all about preference. Btw, Amazon does have some good deals.
i actually prefer the 305. the screens are easier to read because of the size and it has the map feature. it's great to be able to run in a new city and see your starting point on a map. it's allowed me to do runs when traveling that aren't just out and back.
I did a hill workout today followed by a tempo run, all while wearing the Garmin 305. Yes, it is big and clunky but you hardly know you have it on it's so light weight. I do long runs with it too and again, you hardly know you have it on after 15miles.
