I looked it up because it was bugging me, the 2003 squad finished 21st at Nationals after finishing as runner up at Pac-10's. I would consider this a poor performance from a good team.

Like this year's Oregon Squad?
Sort of, the 2003 squad underperformed to a greater degree, and wasn't as good. The 2003 squad maybe could have snuck into the top ten with a great race, this team should have brought home a trophy. Really the only similarity is that they underperformed, and they are both from Oregon.

How many national titles did Smith buy with Oregon? How many has Vin bought?
Fixed
What individual national champion(s) did smith coach at wisconsin?
I would hardly call that "revenge."
Also on a side note, Martin is generally a nightmare for the majority of the people he trains, I was glad he got booted from Oregon.
RE: That's because the Majority of those kids did not have the potential or the drive to be great.
As someone who use to run at a crappy D1 midwest school and ran against Oklahoma and kicked the crap out of them a few years ago, I think it is amazing how good they are now and how quickly it happened.

Tim Hacker-Cross Country
Donovan Bergstrom-steeplechase
Jason Casiano-Indoor 5000
also the 1985 Indoor DMR.
I don't recall if Pascal Dobert won a national championship.
If you match his number of top 5 and top 10 finishers in Cross Country with the other coaches of his era I would bet only John McDonnell has coached more.

All this is interesting, but I only asked a simple question: How many national championships did each--Vin and Smith--win at Oregon? I wasn't suggesting anything about whether Smith can coach, only what happened at Oregon. And I think what happens at Oregon matters vastly more than what happens at Oklahoma.
No one is disputing Vin is a great coach.
However when Vin came in, that meant Alberto and Nike got on board but most importantly Galen Rupp became an amateur again and ran for Oregon. That instantly takes about 100 points off your score at nationals and brings in a ton of recruits.
No Galen, no national titles on the men's side for Vin.

Isn't attracting recruits part of the game, also?
Rupp came on board because Martin was ousted– naturally having a superstar coach like Vin helps the situation as a whole, but do you think Galen wanted to take night classes his freshman year of school? Of course he wanted to go to Oregon– but he knew entering into a situation with a guy like Smith would be costly– as he wanted to coach Galen himself, without Alberto in the frame (which makes sense in simpler terms, but was unfitting in this situation).
In addition, I feel like there is a greater distribution of high level recruits compared to when Vin was at Stanford, likely because of the Public vs Private school system, and what types of aid/scholarship one is able to offer depending on the institution. Obviously Stanford has a little more money to spread around...
