German could have one of those days and bust the field.

I hate to say it, but I think the glory days for German are over.
He will never race like he did his Freshman year at OK State. He is too soft and he is only getting older. I predict maybe top 40 at Nationals, if that.
I'll bite
I would like to see this but...
No way a fit German beats a healthy Sammy or McNeil.
I do think he can be #1 on his team and I believe he can beat Derrick(sp)
We will see if he has been playing teammate all season long.
Would be nice if coach lets him take off at 3-4 k; which would still give him enough time to catch the lead pack.

There won't be a lead pack.
There will be Chelanga, McNeil, and then a chase pack. Fernandez might end up beating the chase pack but it is really hard to tell how good he is right now with the way OK State has been running.
Is he struggling to keep up with their lead pack like last year? Or do these top four finishes feel like jogging efforts to him? I have no way to know.
I agree with you that only German and maybe his coach know how hard he has been racing leading up to the NCAA's.
At best, he can get third.

I agree with this guy. Top 40 would be a great race for him. I would be completely floored if he took top 3 like most of the posters are predicting. What are you all smoking? Seriously, what performaces indicate even a top 20 placing at NCAA? It's all wishfull thinking. He'll most likely be 30 to 50. But I would be happy to be wrong.
We all know how talented German is and after dealing with illness and injury and red-shirting outdoor track it seems he has had time to put some good solid training in. Assuming he will be allowed to race outside of team competition come Nationals, I would not be at all surprised to see him in top 10 and a better placing than Pusekdra!
German Fernandez = 20 (birthday is 11/02/1990, today!)
David Mcneill = 24
Sam Chalenga = 25 (or 26?)
I think German will win the race against normal-aged collegiate runners.
Derrick hasn't been tested all year. I have a feeling he will be in the mix with the leders.

Derrick will be in top 5, Jake Riley will be in top 3.
Let's fast forward to the part of the thread where German apologists start posting again and saying things like, "Listen to the OP. He said have a chance. Of course there's a chance. Anyone who is saying something negative lacks reading comprehension and this undermines your opinions because of this technicality we have to focus on as our argument."
Anyone has a chance.
I don't feel that I have much of a chance at winning the XC Championships in Indiana, but thanks for asking!

No, he cannot come back fast. Look how long it took him after he injured is Achilles (or whatever) in 2008 NCAA to even race a mile and how paltry that effort was (and he was 18 by that point, so full grown...) ;>)

I thought he was 17 the summer after high school.
So he was 18 after November 02 of his 12th grade season?
If this is correct, then he was quite a bit older than me in high school.
Fernandez will be top 10 this year. Yes many other are in top shape, but German may have an advantage over the others come nationals.
McNeill and Chelanga are in a class of themselves, in my opinion they are practically pro.
Yes, Stanford looked pretty amazing at PAC 10's, but Derrick was the first to admit that he was falling off pace and was struggling to keep up with those guys. They have been going at it since the summer and I have some doubts that when the distance moves up to 10k, that they will able to hold together like that. Maybe at regionals they will finish holding hands again, but another one in 10 days may push it for them.
German has only been gaining steam all season. He had a light summer, which doesn't mean he didn't train, but he didn't started putting in the heavy miles 'til September. Only his teammates have beaten him, and Girma is getting back into the shape he was at Auburn and feeling better.
I love how Stanford has been dominate all season, but they are starting to feel it in their bodies, and leading 2 big races from the gun are no easy tempos. I bet to see Fernandez, Lowe, and Mecheso breaking up the Stanford "big" three at Nationals, in addition to Oregon coming up.

What are you saying? Yes, he was 17 the summer after high school. Therefore he turned 18 on Nov 02 of his freshman year at OK State (not 12th grade).
I have no chance
I think best case scenario for him is that he runs conservative like ledwith did in '08 and runs with the pack and lets the top guys beat each other up at the front. then he can hopefully outkick people for 3rd
I predict maybe top 40 at Nationals, if that.

Wow, I'd be shocked if he isn't top 20. I don't think he'll win this year, probably next year.

GF is in his 3rd year of college...you must be thinking this is his second year.
