Hi Letsrun, I’m a 17 year old, male, High School Senior looking forward to his final track season. This is sorta lengthy thread, and I apologize for that! To start off, I’m going give you little background into my running history so that you guys can get a little bit more understanding of what you’re working with in terms of advice.
I started running Cross Country and Track in 7th grade. I never ran in the offseason, and didn’t run Cross Country my sophomore year (which was stupid and I regret it!). This resulted in some pretty bad times during Cross Country, ending with a 19:08 3 mile my junior year. My Junior track season was a little better (I was always better at track) and I came out with some ‘ok’ pr’s of 56 in a 4x4 split, 2:11 in the 800, and 4:59 in the mile. I thought that wasn’t too shabby for not running all winter (mid Oct-Mid feb)..but I wanted to see what I could pull off if I actually put in some good miles. I was always very aerobically weak. To give you an example, around when I ran my track PR’s, my longest run was a 6 mile run that I had done once by myself on the weekend, 5 mile runs were rare, and 6:50-7:10 pace for runs was pretty dang hard for me. So a week and a half after my track season ended, I started running again. I built up very slowly, considering I had never done more than probably 20-25ish mpw ever in season. By the end of July I had built up to a pretty solid 45 mpw, with a 9 mile long run, and uninjured. I maintained this throughout most of the season (ran a 55 mile week once O.o). I was excited to see what kind of times I could pull off. Well, in early September, I ended up have a great race and pulled off a 16:28 3 mile. I was stoked. Only problem was, I only got slower as the season progressed, and the races got harder and felt a lot more painful. 16:40 to 16:50 to 17:22, and finally my last race of the season, where I ran 17:30. This could be due to many things..hammering too many workouts too early, not recovering properly on my easy days, not enough sleep, maybe even low iron? I’m not sure...but I just want to make sure it doesn’t happen again with track.
Anyways, that was a little background into my running history, and now that my Cross Country season is over (mostly..I made top 12 for my team, so I have to continue practicing with them until state as an alternate), I’m very much looking forward to track. I always enjoyed track so much more than cross country, and I’m pretty psyched to see what I can do this season. This is where you guys come in, I need some advice on some things. I know a lot of you will say just run, and you’ll be fine, but I want to be better than fine. I want to be great. Ok yeah, that was a little cheesy, but you get the point. I would say my biggest goal is a sub 2 minute 800. I’m going to take a 1-2 week break after my team runs state, so I’ll probably start running around November 14th. My track season starts with preseason practice in February, with some indoor meets into March, and then outdoor meets start through late March, April, and May. We don’t have an official indoor track season. Now with all that in mind, let’s get to it!
1. Speed
I know I’m going to need to work on my ‘pure’ speed in the off season, whether that’s maintaining it or actually getting faster. I’ve been doing some reading, and I’ve read a lot of good things about 8-10 sec hill sprints for developing speed. I’m thinking about starting these 2 or so weeks into my base, maybe 4x to start, and twice a week after easy days. Should I continue to do strides with hill sprints as well on the days I don’t do them? And also what do you guys think about hill sprints in general?
2. Lifting
I’m not sure about lifting. I’ve heard some people say you don’t need to, and others advocate it. If I should lift, what kind of lifting should I do? I would say I’m pretty weak and could be a lot stronger.. 4x85lb bench press is alright..but kind of tough.
3. Mileage
I hope to run the 800 and mile mostly, but will probably be put in the 400 and 4x4 more than I like due to my teams amount of great 800/mile/2 milers. But with the 800 and mile in mind, how high should I build my mileage? I maintained 45 mpw pretty well, so I was thinking 55-60 miles would be good. Any comments? Also was thinking about doubling with an easy 3-4 miles, 3 or 4 times a week. I didn’t double this past summer, and doubled twice a week in season as our coach wanted to maintain mileage.
4. Workouts
I wasn’t planning on doing many actual workouts. Long run of 11-12 miles, breaking a 6-8 mile run into something like 2 easy, 4 up tempo, 2 easy..stuff like that, and then the hill sprints, which aren’t really a workout. I’m weary of doing too much hard stuff because of how badly I died out this season. Any suggestions on workouts that are base friendly and you think I should do?
I think that’s all I’ve been thinking about for now. This post ended up being a lot longer than I expected, and I apologize for that! If you want any more information, just ask. Any and all advice will be greatly appreciated!
