There is no hope for me-
I will never be a world class winning miler.
I will never be the best.

Read up about Gerry Lindgren.
If you have the heart, you might change your mind.
He sucked too, but he was a big dreamer, and he succeeded.
What you can achieve is limited by what you can believe.
If you really believe that you suck and will always suck, there isn't much reason to continue in your efforts. QUIT.
OR - start believing that you can achieve something great. Train like someone that's going to be great. Great doesn't happen overnight. There's much that will occur between now and when you can achieve your best. If you don't believe in the efficacy of your efforts, you won't ever fully invest yourself in a way that can yield those optimal results.
If you run 4:16 for a mile, is that great relative to Alan Webb's 3:53? Certainly not according to the letsrun crowd, but if it smashes your school record and places you well at your state championship, could that be considered great? I think so. If setting a world record is the only thing that's going to be considered a "great" achievement in your mind, go find something else to do - you're most likely headed for a very disappointing future.
Set goals big enough to be motivating - something that will be exciting for you to achieve and realize that you can always reset your goals. Take one step at a time, but you have to dream big enough to stay motivated.

then he abandoned and denies his family and ruined their lives.
Read about Billy Mills. He is a great example in overcoming adversity in running and life. He is a success in both. Oh, and he is an Olympic Champion. Good things happen to good people.
lingren should crawl in a hole and disappear for another 20 years. It makes me sick thinking about his kids and the sadness he gave them.
and I'll likely never break 5 min again, so shut up, stop your whining and do you best. That's what your coach is saying.

That's because you:
1. Don't run hard enough
2. Don't train good enough
3. Don't race smart enough
and of course:
4. Don't have enough guts
There is more to life than running, but the same principles and disciplines apply to other areas of your life...relationships, careers, etc.
Thinks small and you will always remain a loser.

Lots of people enjoy life and find meaning in their achievements without being world class winning milers. Being the best isn't about some way down the road goal. It's about giving it your best today. Apparently, being best in the mile means something to you, but probably better to start with being YOUR best in the mile.
Dream big, but work on a small piece of that big dream each day.
