I'd pick the 100-mile WR as that race is the most physically demanding out of the standard running events.

100m, it is where you can make the most money.

Yeah but no-one really knows who you are.
Also, less money/endorsements.
Any olympic event, for me. I'd have to say 100m too

I would think holding the marathon WR for a year would bank you a lot more money not just for that year but well on down the road. You'd be getting 6 figures for two races a year for a few years after that, I find it hard to believe a 100m guy could have that staying power even if he had held the WR at one time.
So what kind of money did Leroy Burrell make?
He twice broke the WR but had no major Championships
For me it would be the mile, even morer so than the 1500.
I would have to think about that a bit. I was thinking only the immediate earnings in the course of that year, not risidual earning potential. Guess that depends on how far off the cliff you fall, a year or two of 2:15s and you aren't going to be commanding much.
All depends on circumstances, too, if you can set the record in the 100m in the Olympic final and hold it through the next year you could make a lot of bank on endorsements as well as winnings.
The Mile or the Marathon, both prestigious and bankable.
the 100 mile yeah nice... LOL
At this point, anyone beating Bolt's 100m record would make the most sensational headlines. But as a distance runner that seems too fantastic. The mile/1500 would probably be the most impressive to me from the standpoint of a distance runner. But I'd be happiest with what I deserve, which in reality is none. I guess I might be closest to the marathon world record in terms of Purdy points, so I'll take that one.
While I'm a half miler, nothing beats the title of World's Fastest Man.
There's no forgiveness in the 110HH.
a year with the 100m record means as many commercials as you want to be in. and hellla bank. i'd take that
Do we get to pick the year as well? If so, I'll take the 1500 in 2012 - being the fastest man in the field at my home Olympics would be a hell of a feeling.
I'll go with 100 m. Not only for the money, prestige, and "World's Fastest Man" title, but also because doing so would make me the first white guy under 10 flat, which would last forever, even once the record fell.
100m obviously, since I am the only person that can beat Bolt.
100m, mile, marathon
100m - as everyone has said, worlds fastest man
mile - everyone has done 1600m around a track for a p.e. class so they at least will appreciate the time
marathon - the general population may not know what a good time is, but endorsements and giving hope to america for distance running if the marathon world record is held by a mzungo.
If you are white, and held the 400m world record, think of the number of threads that could be started on you asking what you could run for an 800m.
