It is not of vanity or of fear. It is simply impossibly from a physics standpoint. On one hand, you have Teg. On the other, you have the 10K. Has it ever been any more clear?

Because he is too big and heavily muscled with big bones? (for a distance runner, that is); to go that far.
maybe not. Prefontaine; a barrel chested, heavy boned runner held the American record in the 10k at the time of his death and no doubt had barely scratched the surface in that event when he died.
