I'll tell you what you shouldn't have done. You shouldn't have turned to letsrun.com for advice. The fact that you had a girlfriend means you have more experience in the romance department than most forum readers. That being said, smacking her ass seems to be the most popular, but I wouldn't rule out pulling her hair. Chicks love that.

You should have done one of the following:

1) Fart real loud as you pass by

2) Say "hi" to any random girl near her

3) Look at your watch for splits as you pass

4) Nudge your buddy to take a look at some girl in the other direction

5) Talk to your running partner loud enough about a date you had

6) Run with a girl. A hot girl

Be prepared with a PowerPoint Presentation next time you go by her, to outline the main plot points of why she should not have left you, and then at the end whip it out and give her the two open palms and say "This is what you could have had" while walking away backwards, then as you turn a way to run off into the distance let your words carry away ever so gently "Begone, wannabe"
