I find it very interesting that certain universities chase the footlocker and NXN champion year after year. These girls usually are solid freshman and maybe sophomore but then disappear. Yes, there are exceptions... and one big one comes to mind from 2 years ago. The true art of recruiting is knowing who is under the radar and can step up in college. Looking in the Pac 10, I think Arizona and Arizona State women have done a fantastic job with that recently.
Or maybe it is all luck. How can a college coach really know who is over-trained, who is solid athlete that is trained by a good coach who is focused on development rather than dual meet titles? In my experience college coaches don't really speak much to the high school coaches or give a crap what they are doing. After-all they are judged in how they are doing this year at conference.
So I take it all back, it is all luck and college coaches are clueless lazy bastards who sometimes get lucky. Recruit away Washington!
