Hanson athletes love or hate K&K. Some guys can't stand them and need to get out. Others think they are the saviors of distance running and stay around for 4 or 5 years, sometimes more.

Running is hard work, and talent and drive definitely play major factors, but you cannot honestly believe that every TRAINING SYSTEM will work for every individual as long as they have the drive and talent. Kilburg ran 28:20 in college, Jankow ran 28:50, you don't do that without hard work, talent, and drive. Neither one responded particularly well to the Hanson's System, that's not a knock on the athletes or the system, it just didn't work for them. Props to both athletes and coaches involved for realizing they were better off trying something else. You're right, weather and location didn't have anything to do with it, nobody said it did, but relocating and training under a different system could be exactly what these guys needed.

They can't find anyone to light the lamp. They can afford to go after some talent....they need too.

At what point do you think it is not the dozens of athletes who have not performed and possibly the coaches that are the problem? Talent??? Kilburg came in with a 28:20 what do you want? Ritz and Hall are likely not interested.

Is Patrick Rizzo the only hope for the Hanson men at this point?

Does Hanson's recruit or do enough runners apply that they can be choosey about who they accept?

He has not run as fast as Johnson, Morgan or Luke for the marathon yet. So I would say NO. Arciniaga is also better than Rizzo. He is about there 6th best guy in the marathon until Sell leaves.

The told me that they are only accepting applications from guys that have run sub 29 minutes for 10k or sub 2:19 in the thon.

I have heard some of the same. That Hansons will not be around much longer, and that Sell was moving to W. PA. and going to dentist school. It is too bad the Hansons group is dissolving (if true) because they had a great idea to start with.

The Hansons started the program in 1999. They added Brooks in 2003 through all the success that the program had achieved. There was a huge front page Wall Street Journal article in either 2002 or 2003 (before Brooks)Brian Sell had not yet done anything of significance yet in 2003, so he had nothing to do with the Brooks deal.

Actually, based on Jankowski's account, he elbowed Eric Heinonen (Tom Heinonen's son - former UO Women's coach). And while he may have meant to elbow him, he didn't mean to hit his nose...

"...Oklahoma State's David Jankowski was disqualified after breaking the nose of Colorado's Erik Heinonen after throwing either a retaliation punch (according to Heinonen) or elbow (according to Jankowski) for Heinonen admittedly "clipping his heel" in retaliation for getting elbowed."

This was at the 2006 Big 12 Championships. Knowing both, I'd bet it was intentional elbow, and not a punch thrown by Jank-man.

It sounds like a hair pulling eye gouging cat fight. Nothing better than a couple of scrawny little girls fighting for position.

Maybe they left hansons because they weren't ready for the marathon and couldn't stay healthy. Perhaps they want to focus on the 10k for a couple more years.

Great idea. There's no 10k talent in the US. Much easier to crack world teams and make money in the 10k.

I always thought that talent was found on the cross country course where all distance runners are running against each other? Was Jankowski ever a top 50 guy? He has no future in the sport unless he improves over a minute for 10k.

I've been following the Hansons Team since day 1.

They were a team without Brian Sell before...they'll be one again.

Hansons are two dudes in Michigan who wanted to help guys get to the trials. They have had more OT Marathoners than any group since the GBTC and they'll continue to produce lots of sub 2:20 guys and a few 2:15 or faster.

Sub 2:20 is still a pretty damn good time and will crack the top 20 list most years (save for trials years) and Hansons will have 4 or 5 guys up there, sometimes more.
