Any Ethiopian coming from the countryside who is recruited by a local club will quickly know who the great ones are and will be encouraged to emulate them.
It doesn't have to make sense to you. In Europe and America, most that become track athletes want success in the shortest event possible. It's not the same in Ethiopia. You and I both know that a healthy Meseret Defar or Tirunesh Dibaba could challenge for Olympic gold in the 1500m, but they're focused on the 5000m and 10000m. Gebreselassie was more open minded, and Bekele will test himself at 1500m a bit more next year. But the majority of their talent will still focus at 5000m and up.
