Rowbury commented earlier in the year that she had adjusted her training so that she could focus on strength early in the track season with the specific goal of preparing for the rounds at Worlds. I remember watching an interview in which she said she dreaded the long, hard interval training and that she couldn't wait to get into some speed work. Obviously, this seemed to work to her advantage as she is the one who ended up with the bronze medal.

I'm a fan of this sport but I don't know a lot about the science and physiologic affects of strength versus speed training. I'm wondering if the extended strength training for Rowbury in the early season could impact her ability to kick into a faster gear later in the season.

In other words, do you ultimately sacrifice some of your speed ability by putting more emphasis on strength training early in your season?

If anyone could share their thoughts, I would love to hear them.

Given the results, I'd say Cook did an exemplary job (again) of preparing her for the rounds. And, remember, it wasn't just interval training, but also an extented period in Mexico at altitude (I know Leo was also there).

As far as strength before speed goes, even the Jamaican sprinters are doing long intervals (up to 450 for them) on grass, strength training, hill repeats, pulling sleds (up to 50 pounds), and according to coaching seminars put on by Stephen Francis (no relation to Charlie) they don't really start speed training on Mondo until March. Ask Sherri-Ann Fraser, Asafa Powell, Melanie Walker how it works.

Personally, I'd rather have an athlete do some sprints (in spikes) throughout the season like the Ethiopians, but I certainly wouldn't want to tell Cook or Dr. Li how to coach.

I agree that Cook did a great job preparing her for the rounds at worlds! I also feel that a Bronze medal at Worlds trumps any other performance by any of the American women for 2009. Clearly, Rowbury was well prepared for the one race that mattered the most this year!

I don't think Rowbury started speed training in earnest until April or May and I'm not questioning anything that Cook has done. He's an awesome coach. I'm just wondering, in general, if more speed training, early in the season, would ultimately translate into a better ability to close in the final 100 meters or so of a race.

Sorry if this is a naive and/or impossible to answer question. Like I said earlier, I'm just a fan, not a tecnician for this sport.

The people who have blistering kicks have definitely worked on them. All you have to do is look at the Ethiopians with sprints in spikes (and also intervals) all season. Coe ran 4 of his 5 paces all season (including sprints).

But in recent years, a philosophy emphasizing long intervals has really taken over. This includes Webb (up to 12K of intervals per session--and he became the 8th fastest miler all-time that way), it includes El Guerrouj (1000's and 2000's plus hills during base and 300s with a rabbit starting after world indoors), and it also included Krumm when he won is indoor WC: long intervals twice a week throughout base and only starting 100s and 200s in January--and be BEAT Kipteker that way.

But Coe at his peak--with all that speed training--would beat every middle distance runner (that includes every East African) competing today. I'm also seeing more Kenyans (see Linet Masai, for example) appearing to beat the Ethiopians at their own game. I know that Renato has written about not wanting to have his Kenyans doing actual sprint training like the Ethiopians (that's where his hill sprints came from) but I'm wondering if the Kenyans are now out there running sprints in spikes like the Ethiopians.

Coe would be competitive but winning is never assured. He wasn't even the first Englishman across the line in the 800m in 1980.

It's 2001 all over again. Ethiopia's best, who are better than everyone else in the world, were sick/injured and the Kenyans took home gold at worlds. Everyone knows what happened from 2003-2008.

Ethiopians generally don't focus on the middle distances. Their middle distance runners are the ones who aren't able to make the 5000m teams.

virtually all runners when starting as kids start with 100m, then if they are shit at that try 200m & if they are shit at that try 400m...until finding the distance they are good at

it just appears they are shit at 800/1500

In Ethiopia, Abebe Bikila, Mamo Wolde, Miruts Yifter, Derartu Tulu, Haile, Kenenisa and Dibaba and Defar are the superstars.

Haile said last year that Ethiopians were actually watching Bolt's races, which was atypical since they usually show now interest in the sprints.
