Maybe NOT! Go ahead and kick yourself in the balls since I'm not there to do it to you.
Merle Haggard is still alive, kicking and playing music. I pledge allience to the Hag.
James Blunt
Barry Manilow
There is and was only one Johnny Cash. Any attempt to emulate him would have them only be second best, at best.
You must a long history and serious body of work and I just don't see anyone out there that fills those boots.
T-Bone Burnett
Damn. A Tom Russell reference on Let's Run. There is hope for the board after all.
Agreed, there is only one Johnny Cash.
From a social activist perspective, Steve Earle really isn't that bad a choice.
Offshoot question: Whose career path (the American Recordings) has done more to promote music/performers outside their "cultural assigned" (read country for Cash)genre?
Bob Dylan
There was no American folk music singer as great as Johnny Cash before or since. He is the greatest American folk singer since music was recorded. His sound was uniquely American.
I like John Mellencamp, but his level of comparison to Cash is two guys who played guitars, sang and were popular. It's Cash's quality that Mellencamp can't approach. Listen again to Cash's early songs, all recorded before he turned 24. His gravely voice sounded old, even at that age. He mixed the joy of life and the pain of life so evocatively with his lyrics, vocals, and music. It was art, by a true artist.
You mean Rick Rubin?

Yep, I completely agree. The Jonas Brothers have a gift for telling the stories that plague the common man. The only real differnce between them and Johnny Cash is the fact that they are three while he was one. They both sing the tortured songs of life. They are ahead of their time.
Cash was pure country gold. I don't think anyone can "take over".
Haggard is another great one. One of the greatest songwriters America has to offer I think. And his band his phenomenal.
