A few people probably do. You should join RunningUSA to learn about road race directing. They just started doing webinars on race management.
I am guessing the guys at Rock n Roll are making a living. I think the RDs for major marathons are full-time.
Seems like it would be hard to make a living putting on 5Ks and 10Ks. It would mean working every weekend (kinda like wedding photogs); okay if you never care to race again.
Not really. Some people work regionally handling big races with a production company. Some people do local races for second income. Best chance is to get your own race equipment and timing equipment and offer complete turnkey services. But most cities have at least one guy who does that.
You also would be surprised the amount of volunteer RD-ing there is. A number of the larger marathons have volunteer RDs, although they do have paid staff in addition.
It just isn't a big money maker because most races are for charity. The charity expects to get the big check at the end of the day, not the race director.
