Digging through results I found where Matt Llano also ran 29:06 in the Inv. 10K at Mt SAC this spring so he's good and he's no kid.

A certified course doesn't mean we ran that course on race day. A volunteer could have put a cone in the wrong place. I'll assume it wasn't short, but I finished thinking it might have been short and then saw here that others felt the same.

Why would anyone ever redshirt while they are healthy and fit?
You can't guarantee being better in your 5th year.
So about 170 meters short, potentially? ~0.1 miles, or about 30 seconds to everyone here running 5:00/mile pace.
