Waterfall the first 15 and start the next 15 when the first 15 are 200m into their race.

they should just make it harder to get in. there is no reason to have fields this big when there are so many 3:44 guys in it. Make the standard 3:43.00
Agreed: I like a 3:40 A-standard and 3:43 for the B, with the field capped at 36. Run three heats of 12, taking top 3 plus 3 next fastest for the final.
There are currently 32 guys entered with seed times of 3:43.00 or faster, and 17 of them ran 3:40.00/3:57.00 (yes I know this is a little tougher, but if you run an off-distance you should be held to a slightly higher standard, and round numbers are nice--also, it doesn't affect anyone) or faster. With a couple guys who would likely get in via petition (like Russel Brown, who hasn't gone faster than 3:43 during the window due to injury but has a resume that says he belongs in this meet, as he would have an outside shot of making the team) the fields would fill out to 36 quite nicely, and we wouldn't have to deal with any of this only two from each heat advance crap.

My choice would be 4 heats, with the 12 fastest times to the final.
Do it like swimming.
Have the 12 fastest times advance to the final.
Then you can have 12 advance from a heat, no problem at all.
Fastest times advance. The slowest times don't advance.
Very simple. It's the best way and the easiest.

That\'s a neat idea. Have the slow guys go first. They would obviously be motivated to run fast. With the current field, we would probably see a 3:39 or so.
The fast guys would all be in the final heat. They would know the necessary time so we would get a serious race, up to a point. None of this Stember sit-and-kick sh*t.

you clearly don't know what a waterfall start is. Your response is pathetic. now go back and star at your desk until further instructions

It\'s a big field, but if you are good enough to make the WC team then you are good enough to finish top two in your heat or run a fast enough time to get into the final. I would be surprised if a guy runs under 3:40 and is too slow to get into the final on time.
Uhhhh....Ever heard of Alex Tatu?

Yes. But I don't understand the comparison.
Is Macklin Chaffee in heat 2 the recent Williams graduate? When did he run that time?
what time do you have to run to make nationals?
they need to get rid of the standard and take the top 36 period. 3 heats of 12. And then they need to put in an "honest effort" rule so guys cannot declare in every event and then drop out last minute making the heats not full. Best example that come to mind is Rupp running the 5k prelims at the trials and not the final. He should of not been allowed to run the 10k.
Chaffee is the Williams grad ('09). He ran that time just in the past couple weeks at Boston Twilight. He ran 3:47 tonight, only 3 s off that pr (did his heat end up being a slow or a fast heat?), not a bad performance at all and he beat a lot of guys with faster pr's, but obvious didn't qualify.
