I heard North Korea looks like they are in, be a crazy matchup if we land them!

You heard right, they actually got in on Goal Differential in their Asian group, just like we did in the Conf Cup!
The key is ranking in our group. If the US is the #1 CONCACAF seed, we'll get put in an easier group. In 06 Mexico was #1 CONCACAF (despite US having a higher ranking) and we got stuck in the Group of Death.
The Spain victory should make us #1, and we should get an easier draw. Unless, of course, the US decides not to show up against the Ticos at home.
Here's a great summary of the game from a Spanish point of view.

Wrong. The ranking in our group has no bearing. It is a random drawing from the pots. Mexico in 06 was a seeded (top 7 + hosts) team. U.S. has no chance at earning a top seed.
When we beat Brazil on Sunday, we'll be a top seed.

Wrong. Rankings are based on performances in the last two World Cups (we have one good performance and one lousy one but the more recent lousy one is weighted twice as much as the good one) plus the rankings at the end of the last three calendar years. Based on the formula the only one this game impacts is this year's end of year rank. It is almost mathematically impossible for U.S.A. to be in the top seven, absent some very weird things happening, like a bunch of teams (Argentina, Portugal, France, England, Holland, etc) failing to qualify. Not impossible but very unlikely.

How do they choose the groups?
This is not right. Pot A will be South Africa and seven seeded teams, likely something like Brazil, Argentina, Holland, Germany, Spain, Italy, England? (or some other Euro like Portugal or France if they qualify). .
Just an FYI: Portugal might not even qualify. They have fallen into disarray since Big Phil left for Chelsea.
Let us hope that we get in South Africa's group and then get a 2nd tier European team like Switzerland, and an Asian team in our group. That would be ideal and we would have a good chance to advance.
If you look at the U-20 tournament in Egypt this fall, we got a less than favorable draw there with Germany, South Korea and Cameroon. It would have been nice to have been in the group with Tahiti!
