Disco, you have some valid points, but you can eat your own words since you are contradicting yourself.
I worked at a running specialty store for 5yrs fitting shoes on people. Some stores in areas do not always have trained personnel. If you have flat feet(pronate) as you described, you are more than likely to be fitted in a stability shoe. Other options could come from a stability insert and neutral shoe. It all depends on how they feel on your feet and your footstrike.
What does your wear path look like on your current shoes?
I am not contradicting myself. I agree he most likely will need a stability shoe, however, there are some people with very flat feet who supinate and a stability shoe is wrong for them. Therefore, looking at the wear pattern on the bottom of his shoes will give you a much better idea. Unless he posts a picture of the bottom of his shoes on the internet for us to evaluate he is better served going to the local running store and letting them evaluate whether he overpronates, supinates, or neither. In regards to poorly trained associates he research and ask around to find a running store with a good reputation. Also, he may not need an insert since he has been wearing crappy shoes. Quality shoes themselves could do the trick. I suggest trying a quality running shoe without an insert and if it does not work then try an insert.
