I think people enjoy drinking and smoking at his concerts and think his music is fun but I don't think anybody thinks he is a great artist.

QFT. It's not like there are a host of critics and serious music fans who think he is one of the most important artists of the 20th century.

There is a big difference between where an artist rates as to where they may stand on the all time list versus people just liking their shows and music. Buffett is popular, not highly rated except at doing what he does.

Do you want Pavarotti to sing about margaritas, women and island living just because he's highly rated?

I actually play an instrument. In fact, I consider myself a much better musician than runner. I really don't find anything Jimmy Buffet does musically interesting; however, I respect the fact that he can probably sing and play circles around 99% of the general population simply because he sings and plays almost every night of the year. He's a pro - and you have to respect a pro in whatever field. Also apparently he's rich as bat-shit and you have to respect that.

His singing talent isn't not that spectacular, although I would argue that most people his age would drop in quality significantly. Especially since he has been on tour continuously since the 70's.

As mentioned before, nobody does what does better. Kenny Chesney is a cheap imatation.

However, if you want to discuss song writing abilities, Buffett is one of the best there is. Just as Bob Dylan and a number of other great song writers.

Buffett is more than just music, he has become a lifestyle. 99.9% of music artists can only dream of that.

Yes, Buffett is one of the wealthiest musicians out there. His Margaritaville restaurant in Vegas is the highest grossing eatery in the country. He is also cousins with Warren Buffett.

Can't be that bad since most everyone learning the guitar learns to play at least one of his songs at some point. College campuses around the continent still play his music (while drinking copius amounts of tequila). Nothing wrong with that.

I don't think even his fans think Buffet is a great musician. It's about getting drunk in the sun by the beach and having fun...sort of like the Beach Boys since about 1971.
