Rather than bother with trials races, selection committees & various other standards imposed on marathon runners around the world, why not just allow EVERYONE who runs under 2:15 into the Olympic race?
Any country without at least one person at this standard could be allowed to send one athlete who meets some minimal standard.
So far in 2003 there have been 267, certainly not an overwhelming amount for a marathon race.
There are 113 Kenyans and 15 Americans in this total. Renato Canova famed Italian coach say that he believes Kenyan marathoners lack the "proper mentality" for the marathon. (I believe he was referring to championship races where thay have not won as often as one might expect) So perhaps this is not such a big obstacle.
All of the best in the world going for the GOLD is this not the way it is meant to be?
