If I plan on swimming three times per week, is there any reason to do any upper body lifting, or would that simply be overkill? I'm not looking to bulk up, just strengthen my upper body.

College and elite swimmers lift. Does that answer your question?
I was wondering the same thing basically
College and elite swimmers strength train for swimming strength and for injury prevention since it's very shoulder intensive. They also need to lift to build bone density.
If the goal is just to build some upper body strength and you are swimming, i don't think you need to lift just to gain upper body mass. but you need to strength train for running injury prevention.
