BCAAs (leucine, isoleucine, valine) are amino acids that make up approx 1/3 of muscle tissue. Leucine especially has been linked directly with protein synthesis. Instantized BCAAs can be absorbed directly into the muscle. They are absorbed quickly. They raise insulin levels similar to carbohydrate. Research shows a combination of BCAA and carbs raised insulin levels 221% compared to 66% with carbs alone. Readily available building blocks of muscle + high insulin response = increase protein synthesis (muscle recovery).
BCAAs can also be used as "instant muscle fuel". BCAAs can be converted into acetyl COA which of course is used in glycolysis.
Dr. Eric Serrano, nutrition expert, spoke at a conference about an elite level cyclist he was working with who had complaints of fatigue leading up to a key time trial. Serrano put him on a diet of veggies and protein....AND BCAAs. The cyclist set a PR.
