yes-i would hazard to say that many of the guys running at ncaa regionals in a week did not run 9:16 as a freshman in high school. Personally, I ran 10:44 as a freshman. So, yes, I would say it's feasible that "lots of guys" have run slower as freshmen and done quite well for themselves.

How old is he? Age in a lot of ways is more important than grade level. And since I thought you were generally still eligible if you were held back one year, it sounds like he is almost 17....

Who cares? I'm a post collegiate athlete and I still haven't run 9:04 for two miles. If you are crazy fast in high school but then never improve afterward, at least you were crazy fast at some point in your life.
That's not really the point I was making, though I agree to some extent. Just depends on where your priorities lie. For some, peaking in high school or college is the goal.

You need help.
Ritz, like Pre and Lindgren, ran some pretty prodigal 2M times in hs (as a soph and later) and they all did all right later. Webb, Ryun and Liquori did pretty well in hs at the mile (even as sophomores for the first two at least) and did okay later.

Wow what a class of runners! The whole 2011 class was running fast as freshman and sophmores, and r all running alot faster now! Mr Willis times r very solid except 415 mile which means he just hasn't raced one fresh or just not the right race. I'm guessing 408 guy based of his other times!

You missed the point that people were hyping this kid to be one of the next future stars, while this may still be possible, he hasn't improved on his 2Mile or 3200 PR since sophmore year and 5k PR since beginning of junior year.
To be fair, Wills came down with mono in March of this past school year. Despite taking several weeks off of training to deal with the mono, he still ran 9:12 3200m.
He still seems to be rounding back into form. He ran 8:55 at outdoor nationals as a sophomore and was fifth or so at NXN last year. This year he had a great year, running between 15:01 and 15:08 four times, and winning his third consecutive state XC title. He just hasn't quite gotten back to the front of the national-caliber races yet. Give him a good winter of running, and I'm sure we'll see some great times on the oval.
He's headed to OSU next fall to run for the Cowboys and Dave Smith.
